What Are Static and Dynamic IELTS Charts?

In IELTS preparation, teachers often call a chart static when it presents a snapshot: several categories, places or groups are compared at a single time, or the chart has no time axis at all. A bar chart showing household spending in four countries in 2025 is static. A pie chart showing the sources of one university’s income is also static. Your main job is to compare the size, rank or proportion of categories.

A chart is commonly called dynamic when it presents movement across time. A line graph showing enrolment from 2000 to 2025 is dynamic. Why the Static–Dynamic Difference Matters

The same number can support two very different sentences. Suppose the figure is 60%. In a static chart, you might write, “At 60%, online sales represented the largest category.” In a dynamic chart, you might write, “Online sales rose to 60% by the end of the period.” The first sentence locates the value in a ranking; the second locates it in a trajectory.

Group by trend rather than by visual order. Two lines that rise can share a paragraph even if they appear in different colours or positions. If all lines behave differently, group the two most comparable patterns and use the second body paragraph for the remaining series and key interaction.

A clear overview is essential for a strong Task Achievement score. It should be one or two sentences, normally without detailed figures. It identifies the patterns that organise the whole response.

You are not expected to mention every number. Official IELTS guidance asks you to select and report main features and provide sufficient supporting detail. The practical question is not “Can I include this figure?” but “Does this figure prove an important pattern?”

Data selection for static charts

Choose the maximum, minimum, closest pair, largest gap and any exception to the general ranking. If a chart has 20 values, six to ten carefully selected figures may be enough, depending on complexity. Combine figures in comparative sentences: “At 48% and 45% respectively, Countries A and B recorded similar rates, almost double Country D’s 24%.”

Data selection for dynamic charts

Proportions and shares

Use accounted for, represented, constituted, made up, comprised and stood at. Note the grammar: “Transport accounted for 30% of spending,” but “Transport stood at 30%.” Avoid “comprised of” when you mean a category formed part of a total; write “X comprised 20% of the total” or “The total was composed of X, Y and Z.”

Adverbs and adjectives

Describe degree with slightly, gradually, steadily, moderately, considerably, significantly, sharply, dramatically. Use the adjective form with a noun: “a sharp rise”; use the adverb with a verb: “rose sharply.” Never choose a dramatic modifier for a small movement.

From, by and to

  • from … to: Sales rose from 40 to 70 units.
  • by: Sales rose by 30 units.
  • to: Sales rose to 70 units.

Mixing these prepositions changes the meaning. “Rose by 70” does not mean “rose to 70.”

Crossovers and relationships

Use overtook, surpassed, fell below, remained above, converged, diverged, narrowed the gap and widened the gap. These expressions often identify the strongest feature in a multi-line graph.

Static charts with a past date

Use the past simple: “In 2015, housing accounted for 35% of expenditure.” A chart is static because it has one point, not because it must use the present tense.

Dynamic charts covering a completed period

Use the past simple for the main trends: “The figure increased between 2000 and 2020.” You may use the past perfect selectively when one completed change clearly preceded another, but it is rarely necessary.

Charts including the present

Use tense logically. Past simple can describe completed earlier movement; present perfect may connect an earlier starting point to the current time: “The rate has risen since 2015.” If the final point is simply a stated current figure, present simple may also be appropriate.

Future projections

Use is projected to, is forecast to, is expected to, will likely or is predicted to. Distinguish observed data from estimates: “The rate rose to 50% in 2025 and is projected to reach 65% by 2035.”

In 2000, cars dominated at 65%, more than twice the 28% recorded for trains. Car use then fell steadily, reaching 50% in 2010 and approximately 35% by 2025. In contrast, the share travelling by rail climbed from 28% to 42% during the first decade. It subsequently overtook car use in the mid-2010s and ended the period at 58%.

Mixed, Borderline and Unusual IELTS Charts

A static chart with age groups

A graph comparing 18–24, 25–34 and 35–44-year-olds in one year is static. The horizontal axis contains ordered categories, not a timeline tracking the same people. Compare the groups rather than saying the value “increased with time.” You may say it “was higher among older groups” if accurate.

Two snapshots separated by time

Two pie charts for 2000 and 2025 are dynamic because they allow change to be measured. However, each year also contains a static composition. Your overview should state how the overall composition changed, then your body can compare dominant shares within each year.

A table with places and years

This requires both dimensions. Group countries by similar trajectories, then use final rankings or starting positions to sharpen the comparison. Avoid writing one paragraph per country if that fragments the main patterns.

Historical data plus projections

Separate observed and forecast periods linguistically. Use the past simple for actual history and projection language for estimates. The overview may mention whether the forecast continues or reverses the historical trend.

Multiple charts with different time structures

A task might combine a static bar chart with a dynamic line graph. Give one integrated overview: identify the major snapshot difference and the dominant time trend. Body paragraphs may be divided by visual only if that remains the clearest analytical grouping.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

1. Using trend verbs for one-time data

Wrong: “Car use increased to 60% in City A” when only City A’s current figure is shown. Correct: “Car use stood at 60% in City A.”

2. Treating years as unrelated categories

A dynamic chart needs movement: do not write “2010 was 30%, 2015 was 40%, and 2020 was 50%” without stating that the figure rose steadily.
