What Is an IELTS Pie Chart Task?

A pie chart represents a whole as a circle divided into segments. Each segment shows a category’s share of the total, usually as a percentage. An IELTS task may present one pie chart, several charts comparing groups, or charts from different years. Your job is to convert that visual information into a concise, accurate written summary.

The task typically asks you to summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant. These instructions define the response:

  • Summarise: show the central message rather than describe every slice mechanically.
  • Select: identify the largest, smallest, similar and contrasting shares.
  • Report: state figures, categories, dates and units accurately.
  • Compare: explain relationships within a chart and between charts.

A pie chart is not an invitation to speculate. If housing accounts for the largest share of a budget, the chart does not prove that housing is expensive, essential or increasing. Unless another time period is shown, it does not prove that the share rose. Report only what the visual provides.

Static and dynamic pie charts

A static pie chart shows a distribution at one time or without a time reference. Its language centres on proportion, ranking and comparison: the largest share, accounted for, twice the proportion, similar percentages. A dynamic pie chart task presents two or more time periods. You can then describe shifts: rose from 20% to 35%, fell by 10 percentage points, overtook, remained unchanged.

IELTS Pie Chart Structure: A Reliable Four-Paragraph Plan

The four-paragraph plan is a practical framework, not an official requirement. It works because it separates the task into four clear jobs.

Paragraph 1: Introduction

Write one sentence that paraphrases what the chart or charts show. Preserve the subject, place, group, time and unit. Do not copy the prompt word for word or add facts from outside the visual.

Task: The pie charts show how household spending was distributed across six categories in Norland in 2000 and 2025.

Introduction: The two pie charts compare the proportions of household expenditure allocated to six items in Norland in 2000 and 2025.

The paraphrase changes show to compare, spending to expenditure, and distributed across to allocated to. The meaning remains unchanged. Accuracy is more important than replacing every word.

Paragraph 2: Overview

The overview summarises the two to four most important patterns. For pie charts, look for:

  • the largest and smallest categories;
  • a dominant category or an even distribution;
  • the biggest rise or fall between years;
  • a category that overtakes another;
  • a stable share or a clear exception;
  • a broad shift from one type of spending to another.

Example overview: Overall, housing remained the largest component of household spending, while healthcare accounted for the smallest share in both years. The distribution shifted towards housing and transport by 2025, whereas the proportions spent on food and clothing declined.

This overview tells the reader what matters without becoming a percentage list. Official IELTS preparation resources state that a clear overview is important for Band 7 or higher.

Paragraph 3: First detail group

Group related categories and support the overview with selected figures. You could discuss the two largest categories, all categories that grew, or the main figures from the first chart.

Example: In 2000, housing made up 30% of expenditure, followed by food at 25%. Transport represented a further 15%, meaning that these three categories together accounted for 70% of the household budget.

Paragraph 4: Second detail group

Report the remaining categories and make cross-chart comparisons where helpful.

Example: By 2025, the share devoted to housing had risen by eight percentage points to 38%, while transport increased to 20%. Food, by contrast, fell to 18%. Clothing also declined, from 12% to 7%, whereas entertainment and healthcare were broadly stable at around one tenth and 5%, respectively.

A separate conclusion is unnecessary. Task 1 is a factual summary rather than an argument. Your overview already performs the main summarising function.

How to Analyse a Pie Chart Before Writing

Step 1: Read every label

Check the title, category names, dates and units. Confirm whether figures represent percentages, money or another measure. Most pie charts show percentages, but you should not assume. If the chart says “share of total energy use,” preserve that meaning rather than calling it “number of users.”

Step 2: Check whether the slices total 100%

A conventional pie chart represents a whole, so segments normally total 100%. Rounding may produce 99% or 101%. Do not “correct” the chart or invent decimals. If values are rounded, use the figures displayed and approximation where suitable.

Step 3: Identify visual anchors

Mark the largest slice, smallest slice, closest pair, combined majority and any category close to a familiar fraction such as one quarter or one third. For multiple years, also note the largest change, a stable category and any change in rank.

Step 4: Create two logical groups

Effective grouping prevents a slice-by-slice inventory. Useful approaches include:

  • Large versus small: discuss dominant categories first and minor categories second.
  • Rise versus fall: group categories by direction of change.
  • Related purpose: group essentials and discretionary items when the labels genuinely support that distinction.
  • First chart versus second chart: useful when each chart represents a different group and contains few categories.

Accounted for, made up and represented

These expressions are often interchangeable when a category forms part of a total:

  • Housing accounted for 38% of expenditure.
  • Housing made up 38% of expenditure.
  • Housing represented 38% of expenditure.

Vary language only when the result remains natural. Repeating one accurate phrase twice is better than using an unsuitable synonym.

A note on comprise

Comprise is frequently misused. Standard patterns include “The total comprises six categories” and “Housing comprised 38% of the budget.” Avoid “was comprised of” in formal exam writing when a clearer expression such as “consisted of” or “was made up of” is available.

Combined proportions

  • X and Y together accounted for 55%.
  • The two largest categories made up a combined 63%.
  • X, Y and Z collectively represented nearly three quarters of the total.
  • The remaining categories constituted the other 27%.

Calculate combinations carefully. If the displayed figures are rounded, use approximately or about rather than claiming false precision.

Fractions and Approximation for Pie Charts

Fractions make comparisons easy to understand, but they must match the data. Use them to vary language, not to replace every percentage.

Just over, just under and nearly

  • 27% = just over a quarter
  • 23% = just under a quarter
  • 48% = nearly half or just under half
  • 52% = just over half
  • 31% = approximately a third
  • 68% = about two thirds

Nearly and almost mean below the reference point. A figure of 52% is not “nearly half”; it is just over half. Approximately, about and roughly allow a small difference on either side.

Exact numbers versus approximations

If the chart labels a segment as 27%, reporting 27% is accurate. Saying just over a quarter is also accurate and demonstrates flexibility. Strong responses often use both: “Housing accounted for 27%, just over a quarter of total expenditure.” Do not turn a precise chart into a vague response. Approximation should clarify the relationship, not hide data.

Comparison, Ranking and Similarity Vocabulary

Largest and smallest shares

  • X accounted for the largest proportion, at 42%.
  • Y represented the smallest share, at only 4%.
  • X was the dominant category, making up almost half of the total.
  • Y was the least significant component in percentage terms.
  • X ranked first, followed by Y and Z.
  • The share for X was second only to that for Y.

Use dominant only when one slice is clearly larger than the others. A category at 31% is not necessarily dominant if another stands at 30%.

Higher and lower proportions

  • The proportion for X was higher than that for Y.
  • X exceeded Y by 12 percentage points.
  • X’s share was 12 points greater than Y’s.
  • Y accounted for a considerably smaller percentage than X.
  • There was a gap of 12 percentage points between the categories.

Compare like with like. “Housing was higher than food” sounds as if the physical items are being compared. “The proportion spent on housing was higher than the figure for food” is precise.

Similar proportions

  • The figures for X and Y were similar, at 18% and 20%.
  • X and Y recorded comparable shares.
  • There was little difference between the two categories.
  • The proportions were almost identical.
  • Both categories accounted for approximately one fifth.

Multiplicative comparisons

  • X’s share was twice that of Y.
  • X accounted for twice the proportion recorded for Y.
  • The percentage for X was roughly three times as high as Y’s.
  • At 40%, X was double Y’s 20% share.

Avoid “twice higher than,” which is ambiguous. If the values are 38% and 20%, write almost twice or roughly double, not exactly twice.

Vocabulary for Two or More Pie Charts

Multiple pie charts may compare years, countries, age groups or other populations. First decide whether the charts show change over time or a static comparison between groups.

When the charts show different years

Use change verbs and state the start, end or size of movement:

  • The share of X rose from 20% to 32%.
  • X increased by 12 percentage points.
  • Y fell to 18%, down from 27%.
  • Z remained unchanged at 10%.
  • X overtook Y to become the largest category.
  • The distribution shifted away from X towards Y.

From marks the starting value, to marks the destination, and by marks the amount of change. “Rose from 20% to 32%” equals a rise of 12 percentage points.

Percentage points versus percent change

If a share rises from 20% to 30%, it increases by 10 percentage points. Relative to the original value, it increases by 50%. IELTS charts usually make the percentage-point description clearer because it directly compares the displayed shares. Do not write “increased by 30%” when you mean “increased to 30%.”

When the charts compare groups rather than time

Do not use rise or fall. Use static comparison language:

  • Housing accounted for a larger share in City A than in City B.
  • The two countries devoted identical proportions to healthcare.
  • Unlike Group A, Group B allocated its largest share to transport.
  • Food represented 30% in A, compared with 22% in B.
  • The pattern for X was broadly similar across the two populations.

Useful connectors

Whereas, while, by contrast, in comparison, similarly, meanwhile and respectively can make relationships explicit. Use one connector where it helps; do not stack several.

Clear: Food’s share fell to 18%, whereas housing increased to 38%.

Overloaded: However, on the other hand, by contrast, housing increased.

Essential Grammar and Sentence Patterns

The proportion of, the percentage of and the figure for

  • The proportion of spending allocated to housing was 38%.
  • The percentage of respondents choosing X stood at 42%.
  • The figure for renewable energy was twice that for coal.
  • Housing’s share rose by eight percentage points.

These frames prevent repetition and clarify what is being measured. Do not write “the percentage of housing was 38%” if the chart concerns spending; write “the percentage of spending allocated to housing.”

Subject–verb agreement

  • The proportion of households was 30%.
  • The percentages for X and Y were similar.
  • Almost half of the budget was allocated to essentials.
  • Nearly half of the respondents were aged under 30.

Agreement depends on the grammatical head or the noun following the fraction. Check carefully when using half of, a third of and the majority of.

Tense

Use the past simple for completed past years: “Housing accounted for 30% in 2000.” Use present simple when no date is given or when introducing the visual: “The charts compare household spending.” Use future or projection language for forecast data: “The share is projected to reach 40% by 2040.” Do not treat a forecast as a confirmed result.

Respectively

Respectively pairs categories and values in the same order: “Housing and food accounted for 38% and 18%, respectively.” Use it only when the match is easy to follow. A sentence with five categories and five figures is better divided.

Varied sentence patterns

  • Category first: Housing accounted for 38% of spending.
  • Figure first: At 38%, housing represented the largest share.
  • Comparison clause: While housing rose, food’s share declined.
  • Relative clause: Housing, which stood at 30% in 2000, reached 38% in 2025.
  • Participle clause: Housing rose to 38%, becoming the largest component by a wider margin.
  • There construction: There was an eight-point increase in housing expenditure.

Grammatical range does not mean making every sentence long. Combine controlled complex sentences with clear simple ones. Accuracy, punctuation and logical relationships matter more than complexity for its own sake.

The charts compare groups, not years. Therefore, the response uses higher, more common, compared with and whereas, not rose or fell.

Common IELTS Pie Chart Mistakes

  1. Missing the overview. Detailed percentages cannot replace a summary of the most important patterns.
  2. Listing slices clockwise. A mechanical inventory shows little selection or comparison.
  3. Reporting every figure. Choose enough data to support key features rather than copying the entire chart into sentences.
  4. Using change verbs for static charts. A larger share is not automatically an increase.
  5. Confusing to and by. “Rose to 30%” gives the final value; “rose by 30%” gives relative change.
  6. Confusing percent and percentage points. A move from 20% to 30% is ten percentage points, not ten percent.
  7. Using inaccurate fractions. 40% is two fifths, not approximately one third.
  8. Inventing explanations. Do not claim that cost, policy or preference caused a result unless the visual states it.
  9. Overusing accounted for. Vary precise sentence structures, but do not force awkward synonyms.
  10. Writing a conclusion instead of an overview. A conclusion that repeats numbers cannot repair a missing main-pattern summary.
  11. Ignoring totals and rounding. Check combinations before claiming that categories form a majority or three quarters.
  12. Incorrect subject–verb agreement. “The proportion was,” but “the percentages were.”
  13. Using headings or bullet points in the exam response. IELTS requires connected prose in full sentences.

What Band 7 Vocabulary Really Requires

Band 7 vocabulary is not a collection of rare words. The public descriptors emphasise sufficient flexibility and precision, awareness of style and collocation, and generally effective control despite some errors. For pie charts, precision means matching language to the relationship shown.
