It is useful only if the data moves up and down. A single rise followed by stability or a consistent fall is not fluctuation. Accurate ordinary vocabulary scores better than an impressive but incorrect word.
Should the overview contain numbers?
Usually, it is clearer to keep the overview focused on broad patterns and place exact figures in the detail paragraphs. A number may occasionally be essential to express a defining feature, but a data-heavy overview can become another detail paragraph.
What does “twice as high as” mean?
It means one value is two times the other. If X is 60 and Y is 30, X is twice as high as Y. For people or other countable nouns, write “twice as many”; for an uncountable quantity, write “twice as much.”
When should I use “respectively”?
Use it to match two or more categories with values in the same order: “X and Y stood at 30% and 45%, respectively.” Avoid it when the sentence contains too many items or the pairing could be misunderstood.
What vocabulary raises my IELTS band?
No single word raises a band. Examiners assess range, precision, appropriacy and accuracy across the whole response. Learn collocations, choose language that matches the data, vary sentence patterns and check spelling.
Can a bar chart appear with a table or line graph?
Yes. Academic Task 1 may present one or more visuals. For a mixed task, identify the relationship between them, select the major features from both and organise the response around meaningful comparisons instead of treating each visual as an unrelated mini-task.
