This distinction matters for calculators. A calculator can help a student understand score structure, total the two official section scores, calculate a Selection Index, or estimate a fixed practice form using its published table. The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT share a common vertical scale across their overlapping range. For example, an official PSAT/NMSQT Math score of 500 represents approximately the same current achievement as an SAT Math score of 500. The PSAT/NMSQT ends at 760 per section because it is designed for an earlier grade-level range; the SAT extends to 800 per section.
This does not make the PSAT total a guaranteed future SAT result. A student may study, learn more coursework and improve before the SAT, or may perform differently because of normal variation and test-day conditions. How Is the National Merit Selection Index Calculated?

All Tester and grade-level percentiles
If the report shows the 70th percentile, it means the student scored as well as or better than 70% of the defined comparison group. It does not mean 70% of questions were correct. Reading and Writing 700 plus Math 610 produces a total of 1310 and a Selection Index of 201. The result is strong overall, but the 90-point section difference directs the student toward targeted Math practice. The high Reading and Writing score also lifts the Selection Index because it is double-weighted.
Example 3: Same number correct, different reported score
Two students each answer 42 scored Reading and Writing questions correctly. They need not receive the same section score because their administered questions and response patterns can have different calibrated characteristics.
