What is a PSAT raw score and what is a scaled score?

A raw score is a simple count of correct answers. If you answer 20 of 27 Reading and Writing questions correctly in one module, the familiar raw count is 20. You can also calculate an accuracy percentage by dividing correct answers by questions attempted. Raw performance is useful for reviewing practice, but it is not the score shown at the top of an official digital PSAT report.

A scaled score expresses performance on a consistent reporting scale. PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 report Reading and Writing and Math section scores from 160 to 760, in ten-point increments. Adding the two sections produces a total from 320 to 1520. The scale allows students to compare achievement across different test forms and track growth across the SAT Suite.

The arrow is deliberately not an equals sign. A paper classroom quiz may award one point for each correct response, but an adaptive standardized assessment needs to account for differences in the questions a student receives. A raw total describes what happened on one form. A scaled result is designed to describe the underlying achievement measured by the assessment.

Students often search for a raw-to-scaled calculator after taking a Bluebook practice test, a school practice set, or a third-party mock exam. Before interpreting a number, identify the source. An official Bluebook test can calculate its own score. A linear PDF practice form may have a form-specific scoring guide. A third-party test requires that publisher’s scale. Mixing a raw count from one form with a conversion table from another can produce a convincing-looking but invalid number.

Why is there no exact digital PSAT raw-score conversion table?

The current digital SAT Suite uses multistage adaptive testing and item response theory. College Board explains that the score depends on several factors, including the characteristics and difficulty of questions answered correctly or incorrectly and the probability that a response pattern suggests guessing. Two students can answer the same number of questions correctly in a section and receive different section scores.

That makes a universal statement such as “45 correct always equals 650” unsound. The raw count does not tell you which questions were correct, whether the second module contained a more or less challenging mix, or which embedded questions were pretest items that did not count. It also cannot reproduce the statistical model applied to the operational test.

Equating is another reason not to reuse one curve forever. Standardized testing programs create different forms for security and access. Scaling and equating are intended to make scores comparable even when forms differ slightly in difficulty. The official result is therefore more informative than a raw percentage alone.

Watch for outdated charts: Many search results show raw-to-scaled tables from the old paper PSAT, with separate Reading, Writing and Language, calculator Math, and no-calculator Math counts. Those tables do not describe the current digital, two-section, adaptive PSAT.

The calculator on this page responds to that limitation in three ways. It asks for each module separately, includes the observed second-module route, and returns a broad range rather than an invented exact score. The range is useful for study planning; it is not suitable for National Merit qualification, scholarship decisions, or reporting an official result.

How digital PSAT adaptive modules affect scoring

Reading and Writing and Math are each divided into two separately timed modules. Module 1 gives students a broad mix of difficulty. Performance in that first module helps determine the mix of questions in Module 2. A stronger first-module performance generally leads to a Module 2 with more challenging questions; a weaker performance generally leads to a less challenging mix.

The final section score uses performance across both modules. The route is not a punishment or bonus. College Board states that a range of section scores is possible regardless of the route, and students are not automatically advantaged by receiving the more challenging mix or disadvantaged by receiving the less challenging mix. The adaptive design aims to measure efficiently at the student’s current level.

Why Module 1 deserves special attention

Every question matters, but Module 1 has an additional routing role. Rushing through it can place the student on a second-module path that provides less evidence at the upper end of the scale. That does not make recovery impossible, but it can constrain what the assessment can confidently measure. Work accurately, use the review screen, and change answers only for a clear reason.

Does a harder Module 2 guarantee a high score?

No. Receiving a more challenging mix suggests the first module provided stronger evidence, but the student still needs to perform in Module 2. Route impressions are also unreliable: a student may find a topic personally difficult and assume it was the harder route, or find familiar advanced questions easy and assume it was the easier route. Treat route as a calculator input only when the practice platform clearly identifies it.

Should you leave questions blank?

No guessing penalty applies. College Board advises that, for most students trying their best, it is better to guess than leave a question blank—especially after eliminating one or more choices. A blank guarantees no credit, while an informed guess has a chance. Still, random clicking through a module can create a response pattern that does not reflect the student’s knowledge.

This calculator is configured for PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, which share the same content and 320–1520 reporting scale. Do not enter a PSAT 8/9 raw count and interpret the output as PSAT/NMSQT. The younger assessment has a different score floor and ceiling, and an appropriate estimator would need separate assumptions.

The total is always the sum of the two reported section scores. For example, 610 Reading and Writing plus 570 Math equals 1180. Because section results are reported in ten-point increments, an official total also appears in ten-point increments. Percent correct is not added to a scaled score, and there is no third test score for the current digital format.

How many questions are on the digital PSAT?

PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 contain 54 Reading and Writing questions across two 32-minute modules and 44 Math questions across two 35-minute modules. That is 98 questions in total. Each Reading and Writing module contains 27 questions, while each Math module contains 22.

College Board’s scoring explanation says each module contains two pretest questions that do not count toward the score. Students are not told which questions they are. Their responses help evaluate items for possible future use. Consequently, counting every visible question as if it had identical scoring status introduces uncertainty even before question difficulty and routing are considered.

For practice review, still count all correct answers. The count is valuable for finding weaknesses and monitoring accuracy. Just avoid pretending that 98 visible questions translate into 98 equally weighted operational points. The official scale is built to provide comparable achievement information, not a simple percentage grade.

Worked raw-to-scaled score examples

Example 1: stronger route with balanced accuracy

A student answers 20 and 21 Reading and Writing questions correctly, for 41 of 54. In Math, the student answers 16 and 17 correctly, for 33 of 44. The observed Module 2 mix is more challenging in both sections. The calculator returns broad section bands and a total band, not a single official result. The useful takeaway is the profile: Reading and Writing accuracy is about 76%, Math accuracy is 75%, and both first modules were strong enough to support the more challenging route.

The next step is not to celebrate or panic over the midpoint. Review which content domains caused errors. If Math misses cluster in Advanced Math, that pattern is more actionable than a speculative ten-point difference in the estimate.

Example 2: equal total correct, different routes

Student A and Student B each get 40 of 54 Reading and Writing questions correct. Student A performs strongly in Module 1 and sees a more challenging Module 2. Student B misses more Module 1 questions and sees a less challenging Module 2, then answers many easier questions correctly. Their raw totals match, but the evidence represented by the response patterns is not identical. An exact universal curve would erase that information.

This is the central reason the calculator asks for route. Even with that input, it cannot know individual item parameters or which questions were pretest items, so it deliberately maintains a wide range.

Example 3: unknown Module 2 route

A student uses a third-party practice test that imitates the digital format but does not reveal route information. Select “I do not know.” The calculator applies no route adjustment and widens the estimate. That result is less precise, which is appropriate. For a better baseline, complete a full official Bluebook practice test and use the score calculated by the platform.

Example 4: high raw accuracy near the ceiling

A student answers almost every question correctly on a more challenging Module 2. The planning range approaches the 760 section ceiling. It should not be interpreted as proof of a perfect score because one or two misses can have different effects depending on the items, and the calculator cannot distinguish operational from pretest questions. The official score report remains necessary.

Accuracy becomes more meaningful when paired with three pieces of evidence: first-module performance, second-module route, and domain-level error patterns. For example, 80% accuracy achieved with careful pacing across both modules is different from 80% produced by perfect early work followed by rushed random responses.

How to get your official PSAT scaled score

  1. Use the official score source. Students age 13 and older can access additional insights through their College Board account. Eligible U.S. students may also see information through BigFuture School, while schools receive score reports they can share.
  2. Read the total and sections separately. The total summarizes performance, but the 160–760 Reading and Writing and Math scores reveal the academic profile.
  3. Check the score range. Official reporting may show a range indicating how a score could vary across another administration under similar conditions. Treat tiny differences cautiously.
  4. Review knowledge and skills. Use the domain information and question review available for practice tests to decide what to study next.
  5. For practice, trust Bluebook’s calculated result. Do not replace it with a generic raw conversion from a different form.

PSAT readiness benchmarks by grade

A scaled score can be compared with grade-level benchmarks, but raw correct answers cannot. Current College Board benchmarks for PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are section-specific:

The benchmark is not a passing score, graduation requirement, college-admission cutoff, or prediction of one student’s future. It indicates whether performance is on track for the related college and career readiness standard. Interpret Reading and Writing and Math separately because a total may hide a below-benchmark section.

Suppose two juniors both earn 980. One has 470 Reading and Writing and 510 Math, meeting both grade 11 benchmarks. The other has 540 Reading and Writing and 440 Math, meeting Reading and Writing but not Math. Identical totals lead to different instructional next steps.

Raw score, scaled score, and National Merit Selection Index

The National Merit Selection Index is not the raw number correct and is not identical to the 320–1520 total. For PSAT/NMSQT, the current score report provides a Selection Index from 48 to 228. It gives Reading and Writing twice the weight of Math through the equivalent formula:

Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10

For example, a student with 700 Reading and Writing and 680 Math has a Selection Index of (1400 + 680) ÷ 10 = 208. Another student with the same 1380 total but 680 Reading and Writing and 700 Math has an index of 206. The total matches, but the index differs because of the weighting.

Common PSAT raw-score conversion mistakes

Using an old paper-test curve

The retired paper format had different sections, question counts, and conversion materials. A chart mentioning Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Writing and Language raw score, or calculator versus no-calculator Math is a warning that it may be outdated for the digital PSAT.

Counting every question as equally scored

Pretest items do not count, and operational items have different characteristics. You cannot identify the official result merely by multiplying percent correct by 1520.

Ignoring the adaptive route

A correct answer count without module context loses important information. Even knowing the route is still not enough for exact scoring, but ignoring it makes an estimate weaker.

Adding section percentages

Reading and Writing and Math have different question counts. Averaging percentages and multiplying by the total scale is not College Board’s scoring method. Work section by section.

Treating a practice estimate as official

An estimate can guide preparation; it cannot be submitted to a school, used to confirm scholarship eligibility, or replace the score report.

Confusing PSAT total with SAT prediction

How to turn raw-question data into a better study plan

  1. Record more than correct and wrong. Mark the section, module, content domain, time spent, confidence, and error type for each miss.
  2. Separate knowledge errors from process errors. A concept gap needs instruction; a misread prompt, calculator entry, or rushed choice needs a different fix.
  3. Prioritize repeated, high-value patterns. Fixing a recurring algebra setup problem is more productive than memorizing one obscure question.
  4. Practice untimed before timed. Build correct reasoning first. Then introduce realistic module limits and learn when to move on.
  5. Retest with fresh official material. Reusing memorized questions inflates accuracy. A fresh Bluebook test gives a more credible scaled checkpoint.
  6. Compare sections with goals and benchmarks. A balanced total may not be the best plan if one section is below its grade benchmark or far from the student’s goal.

A practical error log uses four labels: did not know, knew but misapplied, careless or misread, and time pressure. After 20–30 errors, sort the labels and domains. The largest repeatable cluster should lead the next week of preparation.

Students should also protect the conditions that make a score interpretable. Use the approved device setup, complete both modules in one sitting, follow official breaks, silence notifications, and avoid searching for answers. Can I calculate an exact PSAT score from the number correct?

Not for the current digital adaptive PSAT with a universal table. Item characteristics, module route, response pattern, pretest items, and the scoring model affect the result. Use an official Bluebook or College Board score whenever available.

How many questions can I miss and still get a 1400?

There is no fixed answer across all digital forms. The impact depends on the sections, modules, and questions missed. A form-specific official result is more reliable than a generic miss-count chart.

Is every digital PSAT question worth the same number of points?

No. The official scoring model considers question characteristics, and embedded pretest questions do not count. The reported score is not a simple equal-points sum.

Does the harder second module add bonus points?

No automatic bonus is added. The route reflects Module 1 performance and provides a targeted question mix. The score uses performance across both modules.

Can a student on the easier Module 2 meet a benchmark?

Yes. College Board says students can meet benchmarks regardless of the second-module route. A range of scores is possible on either path.

Do wrong answers reduce my score?

Choosing an unknown route removes the route adjustment and widens the band.
