What does the PSAT/NMSQT syllabus include?

The PSAT/NMSQT syllabus is the set of knowledge and skills that may be measured on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. College Board normally describes this framework through content domains and skill/knowledge testing points, rather than publishing a school-style list of chapters. For students, however, “syllabus” is a useful shorthand: it tells you what to learn, what to practise, and where to spend limited study time.

The exam is not a memory contest. Reading and Writing questions ask you to reason from a short passage, sometimes with a table or graph. Math questions ask you to represent, solve, and interpret mathematical relationships. A student who understands the underlying skill should be able to handle an unfamiliar topic because all information needed for the question is supplied.

The PSAT/NMSQT is closely aligned with the digital SAT, but it is not simply a shorter copy. Both use the same two-section design and the same broad domains. The PSAT/NMSQT is calibrated for its intended students and has a 320–1520 total scale rather than the SAT’s 400–1600 scale. Some SAT-only Math content is also outside the PSAT/NMSQT specifications, a distinction explained later in this guide.

The most useful way to study: learn each tested skill, practise it without time pressure, then practise mixed questions in Bluebook conditions. Memorising a list of domain names without solving questions will not prepare you for the reasoning the test requires.

PSAT/NMSQT test structure, questions, and timing

The standard digital PSAT/NMSQT contains two sections in a fixed order. Reading and Writing comes first, followed by a 10-minute break and then Math. Each section has two separately timed modules. You can move forward and backward within the module you are currently taking, flag questions, and change answers until that module ends. Once Bluebook advances to the next module, you cannot return to the previous one.

Reading and Writing has 25 scored operational questions and two unscored pretest questions in each module. Math has 20 operational questions and two pretest questions in each module. Pretest questions look like ordinary questions, and students are not told which they are. Treat every question as scored. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer, so an educated guess is better than leaving an answer blank.

Most questions are multiple choice. Math also includes student-produced response questions, often called SPR or “grid-in” questions, where you enter your own numeric answer. Those questions test the same syllabus as multiple-choice questions; they simply remove the answer choices.

How the adaptive PSAT/NMSQT works

Reading and Writing and Math are each multistage adaptive. Module 1 gives every student a broad mixture of easy, medium, and hard questions. Performance in that first module helps determine the mixture of question difficulty in Module 2. The second module may contain a greater proportion of harder questions or a greater proportion of easier questions. Your section score uses performance across both modules—not Module 2 alone.

This design changes strategy in three important ways. First, accuracy in Module 1 matters, but that does not mean you should spend so long perfecting one question that several later questions go unanswered. Second, seeing a difficult Module 2 is not a score guarantee, and seeing an easier-feeling Module 2 does not reveal an exact score. Difficulty is subjective, and College Board states that a range of scores is possible on either route. Third, equal raw totals do not necessarily produce equal scaled scores because item characteristics and response patterns matter in the scoring model.

Do not try to “game” the route. The sound strategy is to answer every question as accurately as possible, manage time within each module, and guess when necessary. Intentionally missing questions cannot create a scoring advantage.

PSAT/NMSQT Reading and Writing syllabus

The Reading and Writing section contains short passages drawn from literature, history and social studies, the humanities, and science. Each passage or passage pair supports one question, which means you do not need to hold a long passage in memory while answering a group of questions. Some prompts include tables, bar graphs, or line graphs. Questions that test similar skills are grouped in Bluebook and generally progress from easier to harder within those groups.

Information and Ideas

This domain asks what a text says directly and what can reasonably be inferred. Central Ideas and Details questions require the main point, a key detail, or the function of a detail. Command of Evidence questions ask which quotation, statement, or data point supports a claim. Quantitative-evidence questions require reading a table or graph and connecting the data to the passage. Inference questions demand the conclusion most strongly supported by the text—not a merely possible idea.

Craft and Structure

Words in Context questions test high-utility vocabulary as it functions in a sentence. The correct answer must fit meaning, tone, and logic; the most familiar dictionary definition is not automatically correct. Text Structure and Purpose questions examine how an author organizes ideas or why a sentence is included. Cross-Text Connections present two short texts and ask how their claims, methods, or viewpoints relate.

Expression of Ideas

Transitions questions require the word or phrase that expresses the exact relationship between ideas—addition, contrast, cause, example, continuation, or conclusion. Rhetorical Synthesis questions give notes and a specific writing goal. Your task is to select the option that uses accurate information from the notes and fulfills that goal efficiently. Extra true information can still make an option wrong if it does not answer the stated purpose.

Standard English Conventions

Boundaries questions cover punctuation and the joining or separation of clauses, including periods, semicolons, colons, commas, and dashes. Form, Structure, and Sense covers agreement, verb form and tense, pronoun clarity, modifiers, parallel construction, possession, and other sentence-level conventions. The best preparation combines grammar rules with repeated analysis of complete sentence structure.

Reading and Writing skills checklist

  • Identify a central claim without choosing an answer that is too broad or too narrow.
  • Distinguish what the text states from what the text merely allows as a possibility.
  • Use evidence from both prose and informational graphics.
  • Determine vocabulary meaning from context, tone, and surrounding logic.

  • Compare two authors’ claims, evidence, or points of disagreement.
  • Select a transition by naming the logical relationship before looking at options.

PSAT/NMSQT Math syllabus

The Math section measures mathematical fluency, conceptual understanding, application, and interpretation. Calculator use is allowed throughout the section, but many questions are faster without one. About 30% of Math questions are set in a science, social studies, or real-world context. A strong student therefore needs both algebraic skill and the ability to translate a situation into an equation, table, graph, proportion, or statistical statement.

Algebra: approximately 35%

Algebra is the largest Math domain. Students should solve linear equations in one variable, including equations with variables on both sides and equations arising from a context. Linear equations in two variables appear as graphs, tables, and symbolic forms. You should understand slope as a rate of change, identify intercepts in context, write a line from information, and move between equivalent representations.

Systems of two linear equations may be solved by substitution, elimination, graphing, or a calculator. The question may ask for the intersection, the number of solutions, or the meaning of a solution in context. Linear inequalities include one-variable solution sets and two-variable regions. Be ready to reverse an inequality when multiplying or dividing by a negative value and to interpret boundary lines and shading.

Advanced Math: approximately 32.5%

Advanced Math focuses on nonlinear expressions, equations, and functions. Equivalent-expression questions reward factoring, expanding, combining rational expressions, and recognizing useful structure. Nonlinear-equation questions can include quadratics, exponentials, radicals, rational equations, absolute-value equations, and systems involving a nonlinear relationship. You should know how solutions relate to zeros, factors, x-intercepts, and intersections.

For nonlinear functions, practise reading and transforming equations and graphs. Understand how parameters influence position or growth, how to interpret function notation, and how to connect a table to an equation. The PSAT/NMSQT may use polynomial, exponential, rational, radical, and other nonlinear relationships, but questions target reasoning rather than memorisation of an enormous formula collection.

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: approximately 20%

This domain applies quantitative reasoning. Core topics include ratios, rates, unit rates, proportions, percentages, percent change, and unit conversions. Data questions cover one-variable distributions and measures of center and spread; two-variable data, scatterplots, and models; probability and conditional probability; and inference from sample statistics. Students must interpret results in context, including units and what a model predicts.

Practise distinguishing mean from median, understanding how an outlier affects summary statistics, comparing distributions, interpreting slope in a data model, and deciding whether a sample supports an inference about a population. A calculator can perform arithmetic, but it cannot decide which quantity the question is asking you to compare.

Geometry and Trigonometry: approximately 12.5%

Geometry questions cover perimeter, area, surface area, volume, scale factors, lines, angles, and triangles. Students should use triangle-angle relationships, similarity, congruence, the Pythagorean theorem, and properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal. Right-triangle trigonometry can require sine, cosine, and tangent, but the PSAT/NMSQT specification is narrower than the SAT’s full Geometry and Trigonometry domain.

Diagrams are not always drawn to scale. Mark given information, identify the relationship being tested, and avoid estimating a length or angle from appearance. When a formula is included on the Math reference sheet, you still need to know what each variable represents and whether the dimensions provided are sufficient.

What is not on the PSAT/NMSQT syllabus?

A boundary list prevents wasted study. The PSAT/NMSQT does not have a separate essay, a standalone long-passage Reading test, or a separate Writing and Language section. Reading and Writing skills are combined into one digital section built around short passages. Math does not have a no-calculator portion; an approved calculator or the embedded Desmos tool may be used throughout Math.

Compared with the SAT specifications, the PSAT/NMSQT Math outline does not list circles within Geometry and Trigonometry, and it specifies right-triangle trigonometry rather than the SAT’s broader unit-circle treatment. Its Problem-Solving and Data Analysis outline includes inference from sample statistics but does not list the SAT-only emphasis on margin of error and evaluating statistical claims from observational studies and experiments.

That does not mean every unfamiliar-looking problem is “off syllabus.” Test writers can place a familiar skill in an unusual context and provide the facts or formula needed. Judge a question by the reasoning it requires, not by whether its surface topic appeared in your textbook.

Important distinction: PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 share the same reported Math-domain proportions in College Board’s specifications. PSAT 8/9 has a different distribution and does not test trigonometry, so do not use a PSAT 8/9 checklist as your complete PSAT/NMSQT syllabus.

Calculator, reference sheet, and Bluebook tools

Bluebook includes an embedded Desmos calculator for the entire Math section. Students can switch between scientific and graphing modes. An acceptable handheld scientific or graphing calculator may also be used, but College Board’s current policy prohibits calculators with built-in computer algebra system (CAS) functionality and devices with prohibited communication, camera, recording, or QWERTY-keyboard features. Because calculator policies can change, check the official policy shortly before your test.

For 2026–2027, College Board says the embedded calculator can be resized, while reference sheets and images have improved viewing options including alternate layouts, zoom, and pan. Practise these controls in Bluebook before test day. A tool saves time only when its operation is familiar.

  • Use Desmos well: graph intersections, inspect zeros, evaluate expressions, create tables, and check systems.
  • Do not overuse it: a one-step fraction, proportion, or factorisation may be faster by hand.
  • Use the annotation tools: highlight key restrictions, eliminate choices, and flag questions for review.
  • Use the reference sheet intelligently: know which formulas are supplied, but practise selecting and applying them.
  • Practise on the actual interface: third-party worksheets cannot reproduce module timing and navigation.

PSAT/NMSQT 2026–2027 updates and important dates

The fall 2026 in-school testing window runs from October 1 through October 30, 2026. Students do not register independently for PSAT assessments; schools and districts manage registration and select their administration date within the window. Ask your school for its exact date, arrival time, device instructions, and local rules.

College Board has announced new full-length PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 practice tests in Bluebook for late summer 2026. Bluebook’s calculator becomes resizable, and the display of reference sheets, charts, graphs, and images is improved. Windows users should note that Bluebook requires Windows 11 for the 2026–2027 cycle, and Chromebooks must use verified mode. Students approved for text-to-speech or screen-reader accommodations are required to bring wired, non-Bluetooth headphones, subject to any state-specific policy.

Worked examples: how syllabus skills appear in questions

The examples below are original illustrations of the tested skills, not copied test questions. Their purpose is to show what “knowing the syllabus” looks like in practice.

Example 1: Information and Ideas

A short science passage says that seedlings under blue light grew taller than seedlings under red light during a two-week trial. A table shows average growth of 8.4 cm under blue light and 6.1 cm under red light. A defensible conclusion is limited to this trial and these measured groups. Claiming that blue light always produces healthier plants goes beyond the evidence. The skill is matching the strength and scope of an inference to the data.

Example 2: Standard English Conventions

Consider: “The archive contains letters from three scientists ___ the collection also includes their laboratory notes.” Both sides can stand as complete sentences. A comma alone would create a comma splice. A period or semicolon can correctly separate the independent clauses; a colon could work if the second clause is presented as an explanation or expansion of the first. The correct option depends on the choices and intended relationship. The skill is clause analysis before punctuation.

Example 3: Algebra

A streaming plan charges a fixed fee of $12 plus $3 per premium rental. If the total is $30, write 12 + 3r = 30. Subtract 12 to get 3r = 18, then divide by 3: r = 6. The test may instead ask what the 3 represents: it is the additional cost per premium rental, not the total cost or fixed fee.

Example 4: Advanced Math

If x² − 7x + 12 = 0, factor the expression as (x − 3)(x − 4) = 0. The solutions are 3 and 4. A related question might give the graph and ask for x-intercepts, or give one factor and ask for the missing constant. The syllabus skill is understanding the connection among equivalent expressions, zeros, factors, solutions, and graph features.

Example 5: Data Analysis

A survey randomly samples 200 students from a school, and 62% prefer a later start time. The sample proportion is 0.62, representing 124 surveyed students. A reasonable inference can concern the school population if the sampling method supports it. It cannot automatically be extended to every teenager in a country. The calculation and the population-to-which-you-generalise are separate parts of the reasoning.

Eight-week PSAT/NMSQT study plan

A syllabus becomes useful when it drives a plan. Begin with an official full-length Bluebook practice test under realistic timing. Record the domain and skill for every missed or uncertain question, the reason for the error, and a corrective action. “Careless” is not a complete diagnosis: decide whether you misread a restriction, chose the wrong operation, lacked a rule, rushed, or failed to verify the answer.

Students with less time should compress the sequence, not skip diagnosis. With two weeks remaining, take one baseline, spend several days on the highest-frequency weak domains, then complete a final full test. With several months, repeat the diagnose–learn–practise–retest cycle and allow school learning to deepen the same skills.

Quality is more important than raw question count. After each practice set, explain why the correct answer works and why your selected answer fails. For Math, solve again without looking at the explanation. For Reading and Writing, identify the exact words or structural rule that decide the answer. This converts a single question into a reusable lesson.

Practical test-day strategy by section

Reading and Writing pacing

At roughly 71 seconds per question, avoid spending several minutes on one difficult item. Answer what you can, eliminate unsupported choices, flag the question, and return if time remains. Read the question stem carefully before the passage when that helps you identify the task. For evidence and inference, require textual support. For transitions, predict the relationship first. For grammar, locate clause boundaries before judging punctuation.

Math pacing

At roughly 95 seconds per question, translate the question before calculating. Write what is known, what is requested, and the relevant relationship. Use answer choices strategically: substitution, estimation, and backsolving are valid when efficient. Keep exact values until the final step unless the question requires rounding. Check units, sign, scale, and whether the response should be one solution, all solutions, or a value derived from them.

Module review

Leave a small review margin if you can do so without rushing the main pass. Prioritise flagged questions where you have a concrete next step. Do not change an answer merely because it feels “too easy”; change it when you find evidence, a rule, or a calculation that justifies the revision. When time is almost over, submit an answer for every remaining question because incorrect answers do not incur an extra penalty.

Common PSAT/NMSQT syllabus preparation mistakes

  • Studying only favourite subjects: a high Math score cannot replace Reading and Writing points, or vice versa. Build competence across both sections.
  • Using outdated paper-test material as the main resource: older questions can teach skills, but they do not reproduce the current short-passage, two-module digital experience.
  • Assuming every SAT topic is equally relevant: use the PSAT/NMSQT specifications to prioritise, especially within Geometry and Data Analysis.
  • Memorising vocabulary lists without context: Words in Context tests how a word functions in a particular passage.
  • Learning punctuation as isolated slogans: punctuation decisions depend on clause structure and logical relationships.
  • Using Desmos for every Math step: the calculator is powerful, but unnecessary input can consume time and introduce errors.
  • Ignoring student-produced response practice: entering an answer requires attention to form, sign, and acceptable representation.
  • Taking test after test without analysis: improvement comes from repairing repeated causes, not merely generating more scores.
  • Trying to identify the adaptive route: perceived difficulty is unreliable. Keep solving the question in front of you.
  • Leaving questions blank: there is no additional wrong-answer penalty, so use elimination and make your best choice.
