State-Specific Notes for Bigha, Biswa and Katha

Uttar Pradesh can be confusing because different references distinguish western and eastern values. A common western UP conversion uses 27,000 sq ft per bigha, while some eastern UP references use 20,000 sq ft per bigha. Decimal is also straightforward because \(1\text{ decimal}=435.6\text{ sq ft}\). A practical Kolkata-style plot conversation may use katha, while agricultural land may be discussed in bigha or decimal.

Assam also uses bigha and katha, but the relationship differs from West Bengal even when the bigha value is similar. A common Assam pattern is \(1\text{ bigha}=5\text{ katha}=14,400\text{ sq ft}\), so one katha is 2,880 sq ft. That is four times the common West Bengal katha value. This is a good example of why converting "katha to acre" without naming the state can produce a very large error.

This is the most common error. Bigha changes by state and sometimes by district or document. Always use the local value.

Confusing katha between states

"Gaj" and "square yard" are often treated as the same practical unit because 1 square yard is 9 square feet. "Cent", "decimal" and "dismil" are often treated as 435.6 square feet because they represent one hundredth of an acre. But a bigha, katha, biswa or dhur requires a local profile.
