i-Ready vs state tests can feel like a comparison between two versions of the same exam. They are not. i-Ready Inform—formerly called i-Ready Diagnostic—is usually a local benchmark assessment used during the school year to identify strengths, learning needs, placement, and growth. A state test is a state-selected summative assessment designed primarily to show how well a student has learned the grade-level standards and to support public reporting and school accountability.
The two results may be related, but they are not interchangeable. A strong i-Ready result can be encouraging evidence that a student is moving toward state-test proficiency. It is not a guaranteed state-test result, and an i-Ready Scale Score cannot be converted to a state score with one national formula. State assessment systems differ in their standards, blueprints, performance levels, item types, testing windows, and cut scores.

Use i-Ready to ask, “What does this student appear ready to learn next, and how is the student growing?” Use the state test to ask, “How well did this student perform against this state’s grade-level expectations at the end of the tested period?” Schools get the clearest picture when they use both results with classroom evidence instead of treating either score as the entire story.

What Is i-Ready Inform?
i-Ready Inform is the 2026–2027 name for the assessment many families know as i-Ready Diagnostic. Curriculum Associates describes it as a computer-adaptive Reading and Mathematics assessment for Grades K–12. “Adaptive” means the system selects later questions partly in response to the student’s earlier answers. Correct responses can lead to more challenging items, while incorrect responses can lead to questions that help locate prerequisite knowledge. The purpose is not to make every student answer an identical grade-level form. It is to estimate the student’s achievement across a broad learning progression efficiently.
The assessment produces a Scale Score that can be compared across administrations within the i-Ready system. Reports can also show grade-level placement, national norm percentile rank, and performance by reading or mathematics domain. When schools administer i-Ready at more than one benchmark, the reports can show progress toward Typical Growth and Stretch Growth goals. These score types answer different questions, so a parent should not use “Scale Score,” “placement,” “percentile,” and “growth” as if they were synonyms.
A Scale Score identifies a point on the i-Ready measurement scale. Placement interprets that score relative to grade-level expectations and the student’s chronological grade. Percentile rank compares the result with a nationally representative same-grade group for the same season. Domain information identifies comparatively stronger and weaker areas. Because i-Ready is designed to locate current achievement, it can present material outside the student’s enrolled grade. That is useful when a teacher needs to know whether a difficulty comes from the current unit or from an unfinished prerequisite. It also means i-Ready is not simply a practice copy of the state test. The scope, item-selection logic, score scale, and reporting purpose are different.
What Does “State Test” Mean?
“State test” is a broad label, not the name of one national exam. Each state develops or selects an assessment system aligned with its academic standards and approved plan. Examples include CAASPP in California, FAST in Florida, STAAR in Texas, the New York State Testing Program, SOL assessments in Virginia, and many others. Even when states participate in a shared assessment consortium or use similar item designs, reporting labels and policy uses can differ.
The U.S. Department of Education explains that the Every Student Succeeds Act requires states to measure performance in reading, mathematics, and science, while giving states flexibility in how students are assessed. Under the federal testing schedule, reading or English language arts and mathematics are assessed annually in Grades 3–8 and once in high school; science is assessed once in each of the elementary, middle, and high school grade spans. States can add other subjects, grades, course exams, or progress-monitoring components under their own laws and programs.
A state test is normally criterion referenced: it asks how well a student performed against the state’s grade-level or course expectations. The result is usually reported as a scaled score and a performance level. Labels vary. One state may use Level 1 through Level 4; another may use terms such as Beginning, Approaching, Proficient, and Advanced; another may use Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level. Similar-sounding labels do not guarantee identical standards.
State results often contribute to school, district, and state report cards. They may be used to describe achievement gaps, participation, subgroup performance, and progress toward accountability goals. The rules governing promotion, graduation, course credit, intervention, teacher evaluation, or school ratings are state specific. A family should check the current state education agency and district policy before assuming that one test result has a particular consequence.
The Most Important Difference: Instructional Benchmark vs Summative Judgment
The simplest i-Ready vs state tests distinction is purpose. i-Ready is commonly used as an interim benchmark. It is given early enough—and sometimes repeatedly enough—to influence instruction during the year. A state test is commonly summative. It is designed to summarize what students know and can do after a substantial period of grade-level instruction, often near the end of the school year.
Imagine a fifth-grade student who takes i-Ready Mathematics in September. The report suggests that number and operations are a relative strength, while measurement and data contain unfinished fourth-grade skills. The teacher can confirm that pattern with classwork, then plan small-group support before those prerequisites interfere with the fifth-grade curriculum. The value of the result is its timing and actionable detail.
Months later, the same student takes the state mathematics assessment. That exam samples the state’s fifth-grade standards according to a published blueprint. Its central question is whether the student met the state’s fifth-grade achievement expectations. The score may confirm the progress observed during the year, but it is not intended to replace daily feedback or diagnose every prerequisite skill.
Calling one assessment “better” ignores the decision being made. A rear-view summary is not the same tool as a midcourse navigation check. Teachers need timely benchmark and classroom evidence to adjust teaching. Families and public agencies also need a consistent summative measure of grade-level outcomes. Good assessment practice matches the evidence to the question.
How the Testing Experience Can Differ
i-Ready uses a broad computer-adaptive pathway
On i-Ready Inform, two students in the same grade may see noticeably different questions. That is expected. The algorithm is trying to estimate each student’s location on the assessment scale and collect enough evidence across required domains. A student should not conclude that the test is “too hard” merely because some questions feel unfamiliar. An adaptive assessment must include questions around the edge of current knowledge to estimate achievement.
The adaptive design can reach below or above the enrolled grade. This makes the result useful for finding prerequisite needs and advanced achievement. It also creates a different emotional experience from an ordinary class quiz. Students are not expected to answer every question correctly, and parents should avoid coaching them during the assessment. Help with answers can invalidate the estimate used for instructional planning.
State tests target a grade or course blueprint
State assessments are aligned to a defined set of state standards for a grade or course. Some state tests are computer adaptive, some use fixed forms, and some combine adaptive and non-adaptive components. California’s Smarter Balanced ELA and mathematics summative assessments, for example, include computer-adaptive components within the CAASPP system. Texas STAAR is administered online and includes technology-enhanced items; its reading language arts tests include constructed response. These examples show why “state test” should not be treated as one format.
A state test may include multiple-choice, multi-select, equation, graphing, short-answer, extended written response, performance task, listening, or other item types. The exact mix depends on the state, subject, grade, and year. Because a student’s state test may demand sustained writing or multi-step explanation that is not sampled in exactly the same way on i-Ready, similar underlying achievement can still produce different-looking results.
Both assessments require valid testing conditions
Rushing, fatigue, interruptions, device problems, anxiety, unfamiliar tools, or inappropriate assistance can affect either assessment. A score is most useful when the student understands the directions, uses permitted supports, works independently, and has a reasonable environment. When a result is sharply inconsistent with classroom evidence, educators should investigate the administration conditions before making a high-impact decision.
That does not mean every disappointing score is invalid. It means scores contain measurement uncertainty and must be interpreted in context. A pattern across several sources is more dependable than a reaction to a single number. Teachers can compare the test date, duration, completion behavior, domain pattern, prior results, classwork, and other assessment evidence.
Testing Schedule: BOY, MOY, and EOY vs the State Window
Many districts administer i-Ready at the beginning of year (BOY), middle of year (MOY), and end of year (EOY). Local calendars differ, and not every school uses all three windows. BOY creates a starting point. MOY checks whether instruction and intervention are producing the expected progress. EOY helps summarize growth and current achievement after the year’s instruction.
Season matters because a score’s interpretation changes as students receive more instruction. An on-grade-level placement in fall does not mean the same thing as an on-grade-level placement in spring, and i-Ready’s national percentile compares students in the same testing season. When reading a report, verify the date and benchmark window before comparing it with a chart or another student’s result.
State testing windows are set by the state and implemented by districts and schools. Many annual summative tests occur in spring, but exact dates, make-up windows, and high-school schedules vary. Florida is an important reminder that not all state programs fit the simple “one spring exam” model: FAST includes progress-monitoring administrations, with end-of-year PM3 results serving an important summative role. Always consult the current state calendar.
A spring i-Ready score and a later state score may be closer in time than a fall i-Ready score and a spring state result. When educators project state performance from an interim benchmark, the amount of instruction remaining matters. A fall projection includes more time and more uncertainty; a late-spring projection is closer to the state event but leaves less time for instructional response.

i-Ready Score Types Explained
Scale Score
The i-Ready Scale Score is the foundation for several other report interpretations. It represents estimated achievement on the i-Ready scale. Higher numbers generally represent more advanced performance within that system, but the number is not a percentage correct, grade level, state-test score, or percentile. The same Scale Score can have a different placement meaning for students enrolled in different grades because grade-level expectations differ.
Grade-level placement
Placement is criterion-referenced. Curriculum Associates describes it as an indication of performance relative to grade level, with categories that can identify above-grade, on-grade, one-grade-below, or two-or-more-grades-below performance. Schools may display five-level placement labels or more detailed domain placements. Placement is an instructional signal, not a declaration that the child should automatically be moved to another grade.
Percentile rank
Percentile rank is norm-referenced. A percentile of 70 means the score was as high as or higher than the scores of about 70 percent of students in the relevant national norm group; it does not mean 70 percent correct. Curriculum Associates reports that its norms compare same-grade students taking the assessment at the same time of year. Norms can be updated, so use the table and year associated with the report.
Domain performance
Reading and mathematics reports break performance into domains. Reading can include areas such as phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, vocabulary, and comprehension, depending on grade and test flow. Mathematics can include number and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. Domain results help teachers decide what to verify and teach next; they should not be treated as separate high-stakes grades.
Typical Growth and Stretch Growth
Typical Growth is an empirically derived annual growth benchmark for students starting at a similar grade and placement. Stretch Growth is a more ambitious, differentiated target intended to place students on a path toward grade-level proficiency or advanced performance. Reaching Typical Growth does not always close an existing achievement gap. Reaching Stretch Growth does not guarantee a particular state-test level. Both are i-Ready growth goals, not state proficiency labels.

State-Test Score Types Explained
Raw score and scaled score
A raw score begins with points earned on scored items. State testing programs commonly transform raw results to a scaled score so forms can be equated and results can be reported on a consistent state scale. Parents may see only the scaled score. The number belongs to that state assessment, grade, subject, and administration. It should not be compared numerically with i-Ready’s Scale Score just because both are called “scale” or “scaled” scores.
Performance or achievement level
States establish cut scores that divide the scale into achievement categories. These levels communicate whether performance met the state’s expectations. Texas, for example, links STAAR performance standards to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and reports categories including Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level. New York reports Levels 1–4 and identifies Levels 3 and 4 as proficient for its Grades 3–8 ELA and mathematics program. California reports achievement levels for CAASPP and introduced revised reporting descriptors for 2025–2026 results without changing the underlying cut scores.
These systems are examples, not a national crosswalk. “Level 3” in one state is not automatically equivalent to “Level 3” elsewhere. Even within one state, scaled-score ranges and performance expectations can be grade- and subject-specific. Use the legend printed on the student’s current report.
Claims, reporting categories, or domains
A state score report may break the subject into claims or reporting categories, such as reading, writing, concepts and procedures, problem solving, or communicating reasoning. The labels follow the state blueprint. These categories can help identify broad patterns, but they usually contain fewer items than the overall test. A small category result may be less precise than the total score and should be confirmed with class evidence.
Growth measures
Some states or districts report student growth percentiles, year-to-year scale-score change, or another growth indicator alongside achievement. That measure is not the same as i-Ready Typical Growth or Stretch Growth. Each growth model has its own comparison group, time interval, statistical rules, and eligible population. Before comparing two “growth” figures, ask how each one was calculated.
Percentile Is Not the Same as Proficiency
This is one of the most common interpretation errors. Percentile rank describes relative standing in a norm group. Proficiency describes performance against a standard. A student can have an above-average percentile while falling short of a demanding state proficiency cut, or have a below-median percentile while meeting a state standard, depending on the distributions and standards involved.
Consider a fictional example with no real cut scores. Student A ranks at the 58th national percentile on an interim assessment. That means the student’s score compares favorably with a little more than half of the norm group. It does not tell us whether the student mastered the exact standards emphasized on the state test. We would need a valid state-specific linking resource or the state result itself.
Conversely, Student B might meet the state’s grade-level standard but earn a percentile below 50 on a national benchmark. If the state’s proficiency cut is below the national median for that benchmark’s reference population, the two statements can coexist. Neither result is automatically wrong. They answer different questions.
Parents should translate the labels into full sentences. “My child is at the 62nd percentile” means relative national standing on that benchmark, in that season. “My child is proficient” means the state score met the applicable criterion. Keeping the sentences separate prevents many false conclusions.
Placement Is Not the Same as a State Performance Level
An i-Ready placement such as “one grade level below” is based on i-Ready scale-score ranges and the student’s enrolled grade. A state performance level is based on cut scores for the state’s tested grade or course. The labels are constructed differently, even when both refer to grade-level expectations.
A student may receive an i-Ready overall placement that summarizes broad adaptive evidence and a state-test level that summarizes performance on a grade-specific blueprint. Domain patterns can also matter. A student with strong computation but weak mathematical reasoning may land differently depending on the mix and weight of items. A reader with strong decoding but difficulty analyzing complex text may show a similar mismatch.
Do not interpret “below grade level” as a permanent description of the child. It is an assessment classification at one time under one system. It should prompt a closer look at domains, work samples, instruction received, language demands, attendance, testing conditions, and progress. Labels should guide support, not limit opportunity.
Growth Is Not the Same as Proficiency
Achievement asks where performance is now. Growth asks how much performance changed. A student who begins far below grade level can make exceptional growth and still remain below a proficiency cut. Another student can remain proficient while showing limited growth. Both pieces of information are valuable.
Suppose a student begins the year with significant unfinished learning and gains far more scale-score points than similar students. That may represent successful instruction and hard work even if the spring state result remains below proficient. The next plan should preserve the effective supports while targeting the remaining gap—not dismiss the year as a failure.
Now suppose a student begins well above grade level, stays above grade level, but shows little growth. The state test may still report advanced performance. The benchmark pattern may indicate that the student needs greater challenge. Achievement alone could hide that need; growth alone could hide the student’s high level. Using both avoids the blind spot.
Can i-Ready Predict a State-Test Score?
i-Ready results can be statistically related to state-test outcomes. Curriculum Associates states that i-Ready Inform is highly correlated with 46 state summative assessments and publishes state linking studies. Its Projected Proficiency feature, introduced for the 2025–2026 school year, is designed to connect i-Ready results with proficiency classifications on statewide Grades 3–8 exams. This can help educators estimate which students appear on track and where additional support may be needed.
A projection is not a promise. Curriculum Associates’ guidance notes that up to three benchmark comparison projections may be shown under different scenarios and that many factors can cause projected proficiency to differ from the eventual state result. The state test samples different content at a later date. Students continue learning. Motivation and administration conditions change. Model estimates contain uncertainty.
The most responsible interpretation is probabilistic: “Based on the available i-Ready score and the applicable linking model, this student appears more or less likely to reach the state proficiency classification.” The irresponsible interpretation is deterministic: “This i-Ready score guarantees Level 3.” A family report may simplify the display, but educators should retain the uncertainty when making decisions.
Projected proficiency can support system planning. A school might compare fall, winter, and spring forecasts, identify groups whose likelihood improves, and evaluate whether interventions are reaching students. It should not narrow the curriculum to the forecast or become the sole basis for high-stakes placement. The purpose of a projection is to support earlier action, not to pre-label children.
Why There Is No Universal i-Ready-to-State-Test Conversion Chart
A web table claiming that one i-Ready score always equals one state score is almost certainly oversimplified. A valid relationship must specify at least the state assessment, subject, grade, administration year, benchmark season, population, method, and outcome being predicted. Remove any of those details and the conversion can become misleading.
First, states test different standards and organize them into different blueprints. Second, scaled scores are arbitrary reporting scales; the number 500 on one assessment does not share a mathematical unit with 500 on another. Third, performance-level cut scores are set through state-specific standard-setting processes. Fourth, test programs and standards change. A crosswalk derived for an older version may not apply after a redesign.
Even a strong correlation does not create score equivalence. Correlation means students who perform higher on one measure tend to perform higher on the other. It does not mean the two tests measure exactly the same content, have identical precision, or can be exchanged without error. Height and shoe size are correlated in a population, but one does not convert perfectly into the other; assessment relationships require the same caution.
Accuracy rule
Do not use a national table that says “i-Ready 500 = State Score X.” Use only an official or technically documented linking study that matches the student’s state, subject, grade, assessment version, and testing season. If the match is unclear, describe the relationship without inventing a conversion.
Why i-Ready and State-Test Results Often Agree
Both assessments draw on important reading or mathematics knowledge. A student who reads complex text accurately, builds vocabulary, reasons from evidence, understands number relationships, and solves multi-step problems is likely to demonstrate those abilities across more than one well-designed assessment. That shared academic foundation is why meaningful correlations are possible.
Both systems also use psychometric methods to place performance on a scale and support comparisons. They establish administration rules, review items, analyze data, and report estimates rather than a simple classroom percentage. When tests are taken seriously under valid conditions, broad achievement patterns should often align: students showing strong and sustained classroom performance tend to score relatively well on both.
Agreement is especially informative when it forms a multi-source pattern. If i-Ready placement, domain results, curriculum assessments, teacher observations, and the state test all point to strong grade-level reading, confidence increases. If all sources point to difficulty with fractions, the team has a clear priority. Triangulation turns separate scores into a more trustworthy educational picture.
Why the Results Can Disagree
1. The assessments were taken months apart
A fall benchmark captures performance before most of the year’s instruction. A spring state test captures performance later. Strong growth can make the spring result higher than an early forecast. Interrupted attendance, weak instructional match, or disengagement can make it lower. Always place the scores on a timeline.
2. The content blueprints differ
i-Ready samples domains across an adaptive progression. A state test samples the state’s grade-level blueprint. If a student’s strengths align with the content emphasized on one test and weaknesses align with content emphasized on the other, classifications can diverge. This is not necessarily a scoring error.
3. Item types place different demands on students
A student may handle selected-response items well but struggle to explain reasoning in a written response. Another may understand concepts but make errors with an unfamiliar online tool. State tests can include performance tasks, essays, multi-part items, or state-specific interfaces that are not represented in the same proportions on i-Ready.
4. Adaptive and grade-fixed targeting differ
An adaptive benchmark can locate achievement below grade level by presenting prerequisite material. A state test may remain focused on the enrolled grade. The student could demonstrate a coherent set of earlier skills on i-Ready yet have insufficient access to the current-grade tasks on the state exam. Conversely, targeted grade-level preparation might improve the state result even when broader adaptive gaps remain.
5. The cut scores and labels are different
A small score difference near a cut can change a performance label. Two students with very similar underlying achievement can land on opposite sides of a state proficiency threshold. i-Ready placement boundaries and state performance boundaries are not located by one national rule. A label mismatch may reflect different classification systems more than a dramatic learning change.
6. Testing behavior changed
Rushing can lower an i-Ready estimate, especially when rapid-guessing behavior reduces the evidence of what the student knows. Anxiety or fatigue can affect a state test. On the other hand, a student might take the high-stakes state session more seriously than a familiar benchmark. Review behavior and conditions without assuming that effort is the only explanation.
7. Accommodations or accessibility supports differed
Permitted tools and accommodations depend on the assessment and the student’s plan. If supports were unavailable, misapplied, or unfamiliar during one administration, the result may not reflect the same access conditions. The school should document any irregularity and follow the applicable assessment policy.
8. Every score has measurement error
Assessment scores are estimates. A different but comparable set of questions or a different testing day could produce a slightly different result. Reports or technical documentation may include a standard error, confidence band, or conditional standard error. Treat small differences cautiously, especially near a classification boundary.
9. Standards or assessment versions changed
States periodically revise standards, blueprints, achievement descriptors, or test designs. i-Ready norms and features can also be updated. A link that worked in a prior year may not remain valid. Confirm the assessment year printed on both reports and use current documentation.
10. Classroom learning is broader than either test
Students may excel in discussion, projects, scientific investigation, research, collaboration, oral explanation, or creative application that a reading or mathematics assessment samples only partially. A discrepancy is an invitation to investigate, not a reason to reduce the student to a score.

Which Score Matters More?
The answer depends on the decision. If a teacher needs to form a reading group next week, recent domain evidence from i-Ready plus classroom work is likely more useful than last year’s state result. If a state needs to report the percentage of students meeting its mathematics standard, the state assessment is the relevant measure. If a parent wants to know whether the child is improving, several benchmark points and ongoing work are more informative than one annual level.
For classroom instruction, recency and detail matter. An annual state result can provide an important checkpoint but may arrive after the student has moved to another grade. i-Ready can provide earlier, more granular evidence. However, benchmark reports can be misused if schools turn them into constant test preparation or substitute them for teacher judgment.
For public accountability, comparability and alignment to the state standard matter. State tests are administered under common rules to eligible students across the state. They support subgroup reporting and system evaluation. i-Ready use, timing, and local policies can vary, so it usually does not replace the state’s official annual measure.
For an individual child, neither score deserves automatic supremacy. The best decision uses the assessment designed for the question, checks the quality of the administration, and includes other evidence. When scores conflict, investigate the conflict instead of choosing the more flattering or alarming number.
How Teachers Can Use i-Ready Before the State Test
Step 1: Start with standards and curriculum
Instruction should begin with the grade-level standards and a coherent curriculum, not a prediction dashboard. The benchmark can reveal access needs and prerequisite gaps, but students still deserve daily opportunities to engage with grade-level content. Intervention should help them participate in that work rather than permanently replacing it with lower-level practice.
Step 2: Verify the diagnostic pattern
