How to Read an i-Ready Diagnostic Report: Every Number Explained

Decode every i-Ready Diagnostic report number: scale score, placement, percentile, growth, domains, Lexile, Quantile, timing, and flags.

To read an i-Ready Diagnostic report correctly, start with the testing context, then decode the overall scale score, grade-level placement, percentile rank, growth numbers, domain results, and any Lexile or Quantile measure. Each number answers a different question. The scale score tracks performance on the i-Ready scale; placement connects that score to grade-level expectations; percentile compares the student with same-grade peers; and growth measures progress from a beginning-of-year baseline.

The most common mistake is treating one number as the complete result. A high percentile does not automatically mean above-grade-level placement. Reaching 100 percent of Typical Growth does not necessarily mean the student is on grade level. A scale score is not a percent correct. The report only makes sense when its fields are read together.

First, identify which i-Ready report you have

i-Ready offers multiple reports for different audiences. A family report may summarize overall placement, domains, and growth in plain language. A Student Profile or Diagnostic Results report available to educators may contain more detailed score histories, national norms, growth targets, instructional groupings, or links to resources. Personalized Instruction reports focus on online lesson activity, which is not the same as the adaptive assessment result.

Look at the title and labels at the top. If the page says “For Families,” it is designed as a family summary. If it says “Diagnostic Results,” “Student Profile,” or “Class Profile,” it may be an educator report. The same student can appear in several report types, and the numbers should agree when they refer to the same completed administration.

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Curriculum Associates renamed i-Ready Diagnostic as i-Ready Inform for Reading and Mathematics. Older reports and everyday conversation may still use “Diagnostic.” The new name does not turn the scale score into a different kind of number; it reflects the assessment’s purpose of informing instruction.

Number 1: chronological grade

The student’s enrolled or chronological grade is essential because i-Ready placement is interpreted relative to that grade. A scale score that is on grade level for a third grader may represent a different relative placement for a fifth grader.

Confirm that the report lists the correct grade. If a student recently transferred, skipped a grade, or appears under an incorrect roster, ask the school to verify the record before relying on the placement label. Do not use another grade’s placement table simply because the scale score “looks closer” to it.

Number 2: assessment date and testing window

The date tells you when the result was collected. Schools commonly use fall or beginning-of-year (BOY), winter or middle-of-year (MOY), and spring or end-of-year (EOY) windows. Exact dates are set locally.

The testing window matters most for percentile rank and growth. National percentiles compare students in the same grade at the same general time of year. A scale score can map to one percentile in fall and a different percentile in spring because the national comparison group has received more instruction by spring.

Use the date to order results correctly. If two tests occurred unusually close together, ask why. If a student has only a winter result, the report may not be able to show standard annual growth from a fall baseline in the usual way. Number 3: the overall scale score

The large three-digit number is usually the overall scale score for Reading or Mathematics. It places performance on a common developmental scale so results can be compared across assessment windows within the same subject.

i-Ready is adaptive. A correct answer can lead to a more challenging item, while an incorrect answer can lead the assessment to adjust difficulty. Two students may see different questions. For that reason, a simple percent-correct score would not provide the same information. The scale score accounts for item difficulty.

A score of 514 does not mean 51.4 percent correct, 514 points out of a fixed maximum, “grade 5.14,” or five years and fourteen months of learning. It is a location on the i-Ready scale. To give it educational meaning, combine it with the student’s subject, grade, season, placement, and previous score.

How to calculate observed score change

Subtract the earlier scale score from the later scale score:

Observed change = current scale score − baseline scale score

If a hypothetical Math report shows 470 in fall and 492 in winter, the observed change is 22 points. That calculation shows movement on the scale. It does not tell you whether 22 points met the student’s personalized target; the growth section answers that question.

Do not compare the Reading scale score directly with the Math scale score. The subjects use separate content and interpretations. A larger number in one subject does not automatically mean the student is stronger there.

Number 4: overall placement

Placement is a criterion-referenced interpretation of the scale score. It tells you how performance relates to expectations for the student’s chronological grade. Reports may use labels such as Above Grade Level, Early On Grade Level, Mid Grade Level, Late Grade Level, One Grade Level Below, or Two or More Grade Levels Below.

The words “early,” “mid,” and “late” describe portions of a grade-level score band. They do not identify the testing season. A student can receive Mid Grade Level in fall, and another can receive Early Grade Level in spring.

Placement is not the student’s official enrolled grade. A fourth grader with a “one grade level below” result remains a fourth grader. The label identifies the level of assessed performance that should inform support and access to grade-level instruction.

Relative placement vs absolute placement

Some educator reports distinguish relative and absolute placement. Relative placement describes performance in relation to the student’s current grade—for example, one grade level below. Absolute placement identifies the instructional grade-level band associated with the score—for example, Grade 3.

These labels can look contradictory when taken out of context. If a fifth grader’s absolute placement is Grade 4, the relative placement may be one grade level below. Both fields describe the same result from different reference points.

Why placement can stay the same after the score rises

Placement bands contain ranges of scores. A student can move from the lower end toward the upper end of a band without crossing the next cutoff. The scale-score gain is still real. Never conclude “no growth” merely because the placement label did not change.

Number 5: national percentile rank

Percentile rank compares the student’s score with a nationally representative sample of students in the same grade who tested during the same season. A 70th percentile rank means the score was as high as or higher than the scores of about 70 percent of that comparison group.

It does not mean 70 percent correct. It does not mean the child mastered 70 percent of grade-level standards. It does not mean the child is seven-tenths through the curriculum.

Percentile is norm referenced; placement is criterion referenced. A student can have a strong percentile and remain below grade level because the national peer distribution and grade-level criteria answer different questions. Conversely, an on-grade-level student can have a percentile that feels less impressive than a parent expects.

Number 6: beginning-of-year baseline

The fall or first valid assessment commonly establishes the baseline used for annual growth. This number is the starting point against which later observed gains are compared.

If the baseline was affected by rushing, illness, extensive help, or a major interruption, growth percentages can become difficult to interpret. An artificially low baseline can make later growth look unusually large. An inflated baseline can make legitimate progress look smaller. Schools should review administration evidence when the growth pattern is implausible.

A baseline is not a prediction or a ceiling. It is the beginning of the measured growth story for that year.

Number 7: Typical Growth target

Typical Growth represents the average annual growth of students who began at a similar level of proficiency. It is individualized, so students in the same class can receive different point targets.

If a report lists a Typical Growth target of 24 points, that number describes the targeted annual increase from the baseline—not a score the student must earn out of 100. A target may also be displayed as a goal scale score. If the baseline is 450 and the target gain is 24, the illustrative goal score would be 474.

Meeting Typical Growth is meaningful. It does not automatically prove that the child is on grade level, because achievement depends on the starting placement and current score.

Number 8: Stretch Growth target

Stretch Growth is an ambitious, individualized target intended to place a student on a path toward grade-level proficiency or support continued strong progress. It is usually higher than the Typical Growth target, but the difference is not a fixed number or percentage.

A student who begins far below grade level can meet Stretch Growth and remain below grade level because a large gap may require more than one year to close. Meeting the target still indicates accelerated progress. A student already above grade level can also have a Stretch goal; advanced achievement does not mean growth should stop.

Number 9: percent of growth achieved

Some reports display a percentage for progress toward Typical Growth or Stretch Growth. The basic calculation compares observed gain with the target:

Percent of growth achieved = observed gain ÷ target gain × 100

Using hypothetical numbers, a student who gains 18 points toward a 24-point Typical target has achieved 75 percent of that target. If the Stretch target is 36 points, the same gain represents 50 percent of Stretch Growth.

This is not a classroom grade. Seventy-five percent of Typical Growth does not mean the child understands only 75 percent of the curriculum. More than 100 percent means the student exceeded the target; it does not mean “more than perfect.”

At winter, do not demand exactly 50 percent simply because half the school year appears to have passed. Testing dates, instructional sequence, attendance, and non-linear learning affect the pattern. Use the number to guide a midyear conversation.

Number 10: Reading domain scores or placements

The overall Reading score combines evidence from multiple skill areas. Depending on grade and performance, a report may include Phonological Awareness, Phonics, High-Frequency Words, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Comprehension may be separated into literature and informational text in some views.

A domain may show its own scale score, placement, or instructional description. Read the label above the number to see which. Do not average the visible domain scores to recreate the overall score; the adaptive assessment and reporting model are more complex than a simple arithmetic mean.

Some foundational domains are emphasized in early grades. If an older student has no ordinary number for a domain, check for a label such as “Tested Out” rather than assuming data is missing. What Does “Tested Out” Mean in i-Ready? explains that result.

The most useful domain question is: Which specific skill should instruction target next? A broad overall score cannot answer that as precisely as the domain evidence.

Number 11: Mathematics domain scores or placements

Mathematics reports commonly organize evidence around Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry, with exact organization varying by grade.

One domain can be stronger or weaker than the overall placement. For example, a student may be on grade level overall but one grade level below in Measurement and Data. That does not cancel the overall result; it identifies a focused instructional need.

Look for patterns that match classroom work. If the student calculates accurately but struggles with multistep problems, a domain score plus teacher evidence may help distinguish conceptual, language, or strategy needs.

Number 12: Lexile measure and Lexile range

A Reading report may show a Lexile measure, written as a number followed by “L,” such as 850L. The Lexile Framework connects reader ability with text complexity on a common scale. A Lexile range can help educators and families identify texts that offer an appropriate level of challenge and support.

A Lexile measure is not a grade level, reading age, percentile, or complete reading profile. Interest, background knowledge, text structure, vocabulary, purpose, and adult support all affect whether a particular book is a good match. A child should not be prohibited from reading an interesting book solely because its Lexile falls outside a suggested range.

Some beginning-reader results may use special codes or lower-scale conventions rather than a familiar positive number. Interpret them with the official report guidance. See i-Ready Lexile Scores Explained.

Number 13: Quantile measure and Quantile range

A Mathematics report may show a Quantile measure, usually written with a “Q,” such as 700Q. The Quantile Framework connects a student’s mathematics measure with the difficulty of mathematical skills and concepts.

Quantile is not a percentage, percentile, classroom grade, or number of questions correct. It supplements the i-Ready scale score and domain information. Teachers can use it to select skills that are appropriately challenging while identifying prerequisites.

Number 14: projected proficiency

Some educator reports may include projected proficiency related to a state assessment. This is an estimate of how the i-Ready result relates to proficiency classifications under supported state linking studies. It is not the student’s actual state-test score and not a guarantee of the future result.

Projections depend on the relevant state, grade, subject, testing window, and available linking evidence. Read the report’s label and footnote. A projection can help plan support, but it should be combined with classroom evidence and the actual state assessment when available.

Number 15: test duration

Educator views may show the time a student spent testing. Duration helps identify an administration that was much faster or slower than expected, but time alone does not validate or invalidate a score. Students work at different rates and may complete the assessment across sessions.

A very short duration combined with a rush flag and an unexpected score deserves investigation. A long duration may reflect breaks, interruptions, careful work, accessibility needs, or difficulty. Ask what happened rather than assuming effort from minutes alone.

Number 16: rush percentage or rush flag

Some reports include a rush indicator showing that the student answered a concerning portion of items unusually quickly. The exact display can vary. A flag does not automatically erase the result, but it warns adults to interpret the score with caution and review testing behavior.

Compare the result with classroom evidence, test duration, domain patterns, and prior scores. Schools should decide whether an administration was valid under their procedures. Retesting simply to obtain a preferred number is not appropriate when the original result remains valid.

Numbers that belong to Personalized Instruction—not the Diagnostic report

Parents may also see time on task, lessons passed, lessons completed, or percent of lessons passed. These describe i-Ready Personalized Instruction activity. They are useful, but they are not scale scores, placement levels, or national percentiles.

A child can complete many lessons without automatically earning a specific Diagnostic score. Lesson usage should be interpreted with lesson difficulty, pass rate, instructional quality, and classroom learning. Keep assessment performance and program-usage metrics in separate columns when reviewing progress.

A complete hypothetical report walkthrough

Consider a fictional fifth-grade Mathematics report with the following values:

  • Fall scale score: 470
  • Winter scale score: 492
  • Current placement: Early Grade 5
  • Winter percentile rank: 72
  • Typical Growth target: 24 points
  • Stretch Growth target: 38 points
  • Number and Operations placement: Mid Grade 5
  • Algebra and Algebraic Thinking placement: Early Grade 5
  • Measurement and Data placement: Grade 4
  • Geometry placement: Early Grade 5
  • Quantile measure: displayed separately on the report

First, calculate observed growth: 492 minus 470 equals 22 points. Next, compare 22 with the targets. The student is close to the 24-point Typical target and partway toward the 38-point Stretch target. Because this is winter, the team still has time to respond before spring.

The current overall placement is Early Grade 5, which indicates access to early fifth-grade expectations. The 72nd percentile is a national winter peer comparison, not 72 percent correct. Domain results show a relative strength in Number and Operations and a focused need in Measurement and Data. The instructional plan should protect grade-level work while addressing that prerequisite need.

The Quantile measure can help connect the student with suitable mathematics skills, but it should not replace the domain interpretation. The complete conclusion is not “492 is good” or “Measurement is bad.” A better conclusion is: The student made 22 points of midyear growth, is performing in the early fifth-grade range overall, compares favorably with winter peers, and needs targeted Measurement and Data support while continuing grade-level Mathematics.

Every number in this example is hypothetical. Real cut scores, percentiles, and growth targets must come from the current official report for the student’s grade, subject, and season.

How to resolve numbers that appear to conflict

High percentile but below-grade-level placement

Possible and not contradictory. Percentile compares the student with peers; placement compares the score with grade-level criteria.

Score increased but percentile decreased

The student learned, but the national peer group gained more during that period. Scale-score movement and percentile movement answer different questions.

Growth goal met but placement unchanged

The student gained enough points to meet the personalized goal but stayed within the same placement band. This is common when the band is broad or the starting gap is large.

Overall placement is strong but one domain is low

The overall score combines evidence across domains. A focused weakness can exist within a generally strong profile.

Classroom work is stronger than the report

Review testing conditions, effort, flags, accommodations, and other assessments. A mismatch is a reason to gather evidence, not to ignore either source.

What numbers should parents compare across the year?

  1. Compare scale scores within the same subject.
  2. Calculate the observed gain from the first valid baseline.
  3. Check progress toward Typical and Stretch Growth.
  4. Track whether overall placement changed.
  5. Review percentile using the correct season.
  6. Compare domain patterns, not only the overall number.
  7. Note whether testing flags or unusual conditions affected trustworthiness.

Do not compare a child’s point target with a sibling’s. Do not compare Reading points with Math points. Do not use an old percentile table with current results.

Questions to ask the teacher after reading the report

  • Which report type am I viewing, and are any fields hidden from the family version?
  • What is the student’s current overall placement?
  • How much has the scale score changed from the valid baseline?
  • How close is the student to Typical and Stretch Growth?
  • Which domain is the clearest strength?
  • Which domain should receive targeted instruction?
  • Does classroom work confirm the assessment profile?
  • Were there any rush, timing, or accommodation concerns?
  • What grade-level instruction will continue?
  • What is one appropriate action at home?

What the report cannot measure by itself

An i-Ready report does not capture every part of a learner. It cannot independently measure creativity, curiosity, oral discussion, perseverance, motivation, background knowledge, language development, or every standard taught in class. It is one source of evidence.

High-stakes decisions should use multiple data sources and follow school policy. Teachers should connect the report with assignments, observations, quizzes, state assessments where applicable, intervention data, and knowledge of the student.

The assessment may have enough evidence that the student no longer needs ordinary testing in that foundational domain. Read the exact label and report notes rather than treating it as zero.

Can I add the domain scores to get the overall score?

No. The overall result is not a simple sum or average of visible domain numbers.

Should a later score always be higher?

Scores generally tend to rise with learning, but normal variation and testing conditions can produce a decline. Review the pattern and other evidence.

Is a Lexile or Quantile measure the same as an i-Ready scale score?

No. They are linked external frameworks that provide additional Reading or Mathematics meaning. They should be interpreted separately.

Why does the report say i-Ready Inform instead of Diagnostic?

Curriculum Associates renamed the assessment for the 2026–2027 school year. The new name emphasizes that results should inform teaching and learning.
