If a report shows the 65th percentile, the student scored as well as or better than approximately 65 percent of students in the comparison group. About 35 percent scored higher. Percentile ranks usually run from 1 to 99. The 50th percentile is the middle of the national distribution, often described as the median. It is not a pass/fail line. Students learn throughout the school year, so the typical scale score changes from fall to spring. Consider a hypothetical student at the 70th percentile. The student did not necessarily get 70 percent of items correct. Because the assessment is adaptive, the student saw items selected for the student’s estimated range. The reported percentile comes from placing the scale score into the appropriate national norm distribution.

Likewise, the 25th percentile does not mean the student knows only one quarter of grade-level content. It means the result is at or above approximately 25 percent of scores in the matched norm group. To understand actual strengths and needs, examine the placement and domain data.

Criterion-referenced vs norm-referenced information

i-Ready reports combine two useful perspectives:

Why a scale score can rise while percentile falls

This pattern worries families, but it is mathematically possible and not contradictory. Scale score change reflects the student’s estimated achievement change. Percentile change reflects the student’s movement relative to peers. The comparison group is learning too.

Suppose a hypothetical student’s Mathematics scale score rises from 490 in fall to 502 in winter. That suggests growth on the mathematics scale. If same-grade peers typically gained more during that period, the student’s percentile might move from the 55th to the 48th. The student learned, but the student’s relative position changed.

The reverse can also happen. A modest scale-score increase can produce a percentile increase if it exceeds the typical movement around that part of the distribution. Percentile ranks are not evenly spaced units. Moving from the 49th to the 59th percentile does not represent the same scale-score difference as moving from the 89th to the 99th.
