First, Which DIBELS Version Does the School Use?
Before comparing reports, look at the exact assessment name. “DIBELS” has been used informally for more than one edition and product lineage. This matters because the measures, scoring rules, benchmarks, and composite calculations can differ.

Grade-Level Placement
Placement labels summarize how the performance estimate relates to grade-level expectations, such as early, mid, or late on-grade placement or a placement below grade level. The exact wording on a school report matters. A placement label is an instructional signal, not a permanent identity and not proof that a child should be retained or moved to another grade.
Percentile Rank
A percentile compares the student with the assessment’s norm group. A 60th percentile result means the score was as high as or higher than approximately 60 percent of students in that comparison group—not that the student answered 60 percent correctly. Norms and reporting versions can change, so always use the explanation attached to the current report.
Typical Growth and Stretch Growth
Typical Growth is an individualized annual growth target based on students who began in a similar position. Reading Domains

That does not make individual measures unimportant. DIBELS progress monitoring uses repeated, equivalent probes for a specific measure. Neither assessment captures everything important about becoming a reader. Can You Convert an i-Ready Score to a DIBELS Score?
