The rounds deliberately mix recognition with reasoning. Rules and the NBA court
Start with the structure of an NBA game. Court markings, timing devices and violations are not trivia decorations: they create the constraints that make spacing, pace and late-game decisions meaningful.

Answer: one point. A free throw is an uncontested shot from the free-throw line and counts one point when successful. A field goal inside or on the three-point line is worth two, while a legal field goal from outside the arc is worth three. Knowing the point value helps explain why fouling strategy changes near the end of a close game.

How long is one regulation NBA period?
Answer: twelve minutes. An NBA regulation game has four 12-minute periods, for 48 regulation minutes. Overtime periods are five minutes. The game clock stops for whistles, out-of-bounds plays and other dead-ball events, so a broadcast takes considerably longer than 48 real-world minutes. Managing fatigue requires understanding both playing time and stoppages.

Answer: 24 seconds. A team generally has 24 seconds to attempt a field goal that touches the rim. The shot clock prevents a team from holding the ball indefinitely and creates a rhythm of possessions. A few situations use a 14-second reset, notably an offensive rebound after a missed shot that hit the rim, so the context of the possession matters.

Answer: it prevents retreat after frontcourt control. Once the offense has established team control in the frontcourt, it cannot cause the ball to return to the backcourt and be the first team to touch it there. What is a traveling violation?
Answer: illegal foot movement with the ball. Players may take steps within the rules when gathering, stopping, pivoting and beginning a dribble, but they cannot gain an unfair extra step or change a pivot foot illegally. The exact judgment depends on the gather and sequence, which is why slow-motion clips can be misleading when they omit the first moment of control.

What is a double dribble?
Answer: restarting an ended dribble. A player may dribble, gather and then pass or shoot, but cannot simply stop and begin a second dribble. A defender touching the ball or another player touching it can create a qualifying interruption. Two hands touching the ball usually ends the dribble, although the specific action and control determine the ruling.

What is the NBA free-throw line distance from the backboard plane?
Answer: 15 feet. The free-throw line is 15 feet from the plane of the backboard. The three-point arc is a separate boundary: at the top it is 23 feet 9 inches from the basket, with a shorter distance near the corners. Court geometry creates distinct shot values and different defensive spacing problems.

What happens when a regulation game is tied after the fourth period?
Answer: a five-minute overtime. Overtime gives both teams another timed period, and additional overtimes are played if the score remains tied. Each possession becomes more valuable because fatigue, foul trouble and timeouts accumulate. Coaches may shorten the rotation, target mismatches and use two-for-one clock management while still needing to protect against a last-second response.

What is a defensive three-second violation?
Answer: an illegal unguarded lane presence. The rule limits a defender from camping in the paint while not actively guarding an opponent. It is different from the offensive three-second rule. A defender guarding the ball, leaving the lane or entering a shooting situation can affect the count. The violation results in a technical foul and keeps the lane from becoming permanently clogged.

How many players from each team are on the court during normal play?
Answer: five. Each team normally has five players on the floor, making ten active players in a live half-court matchup. Substitutions and positionless roles mean the five do not need to fit rigid labels. Lineup design balances ball handling, shooting, size, rebounding and defensive coverage rather than simply assigning one traditional position to each player.

Scoring and box-score basics
The box score is a compact record of events, not a complete explanation of performance. These questions cover points, shooting, rebounds, assists, turnovers and the arithmetic needed to read a game intelligently.

How many points is a made shot beyond the three-point line worth?
Answer: three. The shooter must be outside the line when the attempt is released; touching the line makes it a two-point attempt. Landing inside after release does not erase a legal three. This is why shot profile matters: two players with identical field-goal percentages can create different point totals when one takes more threes.

What is field-goal percentage?
Answer: FG% = FGM ÷ FGA. If a player makes 8 of 16 field-goal attempts, the field-goal percentage is 50%. The measure treats a made two and a made three as one made field goal, so it does not fully reflect shot value. Pair it with three-point rate, free-throw rate and efficiency measures.

What is an assist?
Answer: a credited scoring pass. The scorer records an assist when a pass leads directly to a made field goal under the applicable interpretation. It is not a complete measure of playmaking: a pass that creates a hockey assist, forces a rotation or starts a chain may not appear as an assist. Context and tracking data add detail.

What is an offensive rebound?
Answer: a same-team recovery after a miss. An offensive rebound extends a possession and can create a putback, kick-out three or reset attack. It is a team opportunity, not only a center statistic. Positioning, box-outs, shot location and the opponent’s transition threat all influence whether pursuing the glass is worthwhile.

What does a turnover represent?
Answer: possession lost before a completed shot. Bad passes, steals, offensive fouls and violations can all produce turnovers. A turnover can be more damaging than the statistic alone suggests because it may create a transition opportunity for the opponent. Analysts often separate live-ball turnovers, which are especially likely to fuel fast breaks, from dead-ball errors.

What does a triple-double mean?
Answer: double digits in three categories. Common combinations include points, rebounds and assists, though steals or blocks can form the third category. A triple-double describes accumulation, not automatically efficiency or winning impact. A player can reach it through high usage and missed shots, while another can dominate without approaching ten in three categories.

What is a double-double?
Answer: double digits in two categories. Ten points and ten rebounds is a classic double-double, as is ten points and ten assists. The label depends on the chosen box-score categories and threshold, usually 10. It is a memorable milestone, but evaluation should still ask how many possessions were used, how efficiently they were used and how the player defended.

If a player makes 9 of 20 field goals, what is the FG%?
Answer: 45%. Divide makes by attempts: 9 ÷ 20 = 0.45 = 45%. The number does not tell us whether the attempts were mostly twos or threes, whether shots were contested or whether free throws added value. Correct arithmetic is the beginning of analysis, not the conclusion.

What is a plus-minus score?
Answer: on-court point differential. If a team outscores its opponent 25–20 during a player’s stint, that stint is +5. Basic plus-minus is heavily affected by teammates, opponents, lineup combinations, game context and score effects. It can describe what happened during the minutes, but it does not prove that one player caused every point difference.

Why can a player score many points while shooting inefficiently?
Answer: volume and shot value interact. A high-usage player may take many attempts, draw fouls and shoot threes. Field-goal percentage alone ignores free throws and counts a made three the same way as a made two. True shooting percentage and points per possession provide a more complete view, although they also need role and defensive context.

Positions and skills
Modern teams describe players by skills and responsibilities as much as by positions. A guard can screen, a center can pass, and a wing can initiate the offense. These questions use traditional labels while explaining the underlying job each player performs.

Which role traditionally organizes the offense and brings the ball up?
Answer: point guard. Traditionally, the point guard handles initiation, calls sets and creates advantages for teammates. Modern offenses distribute these tasks across several players, so a larger “point forward” or scoring guard may lead. The useful question is not who wears a label, but who creates the first advantage and makes the next decision.

What is a center most commonly asked to provide?
Answer: interior size and defensive utility. Centers often screen, rebound, protect the rim and finish close to the basket. Some also stretch the floor or initiate handoffs. A center who cannot defend in space may be targeted in pick-and-rolls, while a mobile passer can make a five-out or dribble-handoff offense difficult to guard.

What is a “three-and-D” wing?
Answer: perimeter shooting plus defense. Three-and-D players create spacing without needing every possession, then guard difficult assignments. Their value can exceed box-score scoring because they influence driving lanes, matchup choices and lineup flexibility. A complete evaluation also checks shooting volume, closeouts, screen navigation, passing and whether the player can survive switches.

What is a pick-and-roll?
Answer: screen, then roll. One player screens the ball handler’s defender and then cuts toward the rim, presenting a second threat. The defense can switch, hedge, drop, blitz or fight over the screen. The offense reads those choices and may pass to the roller, hit a shooter, attack the gap or keep the ball.

What is a closeout?
Answer: the approach to a shooter. A good closeout covers ground quickly, arrives under control and takes away the shot without surrendering an easy drive. Flying past the shooter creates a blow-by; stopping too far away concedes a comfortable attempt. Foot angle, hand position, communication and help behind the play determine whether a closeout is successful.

What is a box-out?
Answer: securing rebounding position. A defender locates the opponent, makes legal contact and seals space before pursuing the ball. A rebound is not guaranteed by a box-out, because the ball’s bounce and other players still matter. Team rebounding requires guards to crack back, bigs to communicate and everyone to recognize the shot’s likely trajectory.

What does “spacing the floor” mean?
Answer: creating useful offensive distance. Shooters placed around the arc force defenders to choose between helping and conceding a shot. Good spacing also improves passing angles and driving room. It is dynamic: players cut when a defender turns, relocate after a drive and avoid standing in a teammate’s lane. Five players can be spread out and still be poorly spaced if defenders can ignore them.

What is a eurostep?
Answer: a directional two-step finish. The attacker gathers legally, steps one way to make the defender commit, then takes the next step in another direction. Timing, balance and the legal gather determine whether the move is a travel. It works by exploiting a defender’s momentum rather than relying only on speed or vertical lift.

What is a “sixth man”?
Answer: an important reserve. The phrase describes a player who does not usually start but enters early and carries a meaningful scoring, creation or defensive role. A strong bench player can change pace, attack second units and stabilize lineups. The value is not simply “points off the bench”; role, efficiency and matchup fit matter.

Why is a left-handed player’s dominant hand relevant to scouting?
Answer: handedness changes angles and habits. A defender may shade a left-handed driver toward the right, while the ball handler may prefer certain finishes, passes and spin directions. Handedness is one scouting variable, not a complete defensive plan. Strong players can counter predictable shading with counters, pull-ups, passing and off-hand development.

Basketball strategy is a sequence of trade-offs. Every coverage protects one area while exposing another. These questions ask you to read the advantage created by a screen, a rotation, a lineup or a clock situation.

Answer: defenders exchange assignments. Switching can prevent the ball handler from turning the corner, but it may create a size or speed mismatch. The new defender must contain the ball, while teammates communicate about a post seal or isolation. Offenses hunt switches when they believe the mismatch is valuable; defenses may pre-switch or send help to reduce the cost.

What is a drop-coverage center usually trying to protect?
Answer: the interior. In drop coverage, the big defender stays closer to the rim while the on-ball defender fights over or around the screen. What is a pick-and-pop?
Answer: the screener pops into space. After setting a screen, the big or forward retreats to a perimeter or mid-range area instead of rolling toward the basket. What is a zone defense?
Answer: area-based responsibility. In a zone, defenders guard spaces and pass offensive players between them. Zones can protect the paint and change passing reads, but they may give up open threes, offensive rebounds or gaps between zones.
