A score measures recall on one set of questions, not how much you can enjoy or understand basketball. Note whether misses came from rules, history, tactics or arithmetic. 1. Identify the possession

4. Match the stat to the question

Use FG% for made field goals per attempt, eFG% for two- and three-point value, TS% for a broader scoring estimate, and points per possession for play or lineup efficiency. Do not use one measure to answer a different question. Official definitions matter.

Context checkpoint: a raw total depends on minutes and possessions; a percentage depends on attempts; a per-100 rate depends on an estimated possession count; and a playoff result depends on opponent and series structure. Example: a player makes 7 of 14 field goals, including 3 threes. FG% = 7 ÷ 14 = 50%. For eFG%, add half of the made threes: (7 + 0.5 × 3) ÷ 14 = 8.5 ÷ 14 ≈ 60.7%. The higher eFG% shows why the shot mix matters. It does not include free throws, so it should not be described as complete scoring efficiency.

Suppose a team scores 108 points in 96 possessions. 108 ÷ 96 × 100 = 112.5 points per 100 possessions. If another team scores 110 in 100 possessions, its raw total is higher but its offensive rating is 110. The first team scored more efficiently in this simplified comparison. A real analysis would confirm possession estimates, opponent strength, lineup and game state.

Build an NBA timeline that sticks

Do not memorize every date as an isolated card. Draw a line with a few anchors: BAA play in 1946, the NBA formation in 1949, the 24-second clock in 1954, the three-point line in 1979–80, the Bird–Magic era, the 1992 Dream Team, and major scoring milestones such as Chamberlain’s 100 and Bryant’s 81. Add a player or rule only when you can explain why it changed the game.

For each event, write four labels: what changed, who was affected, what evidence records it and what later tactic it enabled.
