Number Lines: Complete Guide

What is a Number Line?

A number line is a straight line with points representing numbers in order. It extends infinitely in both directions and helps us visualize mathematical concepts and operations.

Types of Number Lines

1. Integer Number Line

Shows whole numbers (positive, zero, and negative).

Example: Locate -3, 0, and 5 on the number line.

2. Fraction/Decimal Number Line

Includes fractions and decimal values between integers.

Example: Locate 1.5, 2¼, and 3.75 on the number line.

3. Number Line with Inequality

Used to represent inequality statements and their solutions.

Example: Graph x ≥ 2 on the number line (shown with a colored line and a closed circle at 2).

4. Double Number Line

Two parallel number lines showing equivalent values or conversions.

Example: Showing equivalence between fractions and percentages.

Operations on Number Lines

1. Addition on a Number Line

Start at the first number and move right by the second number.

Example: 2 + 3 = 5 (Start at 2, move 3 units right)

How to Add on a Number Line:

  1. Locate the first number on the number line.
  2. From that point, move right by the value of the second number.
  3. The landing point is your answer.

2. Subtraction on a Number Line

Start at the first number and move left by the second number.

Example: 5 - 3 = 2 (Start at 5, move 3 units left)

How to Subtract on a Number Line:

  1. Locate the first number on the number line.
  2. From that point, move left by the value of the second number.
  3. The landing point is your answer.

3. Multiplication with Number Lines

Shown as repeated addition or scaling on a number line.

Example: 3 × 2 = 6 (3 jumps of size 2, or start at 0 and move 2 units right, 3 times)

How to Multiply on a Number Line:

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump by the first number, as many times as the second number indicates.
  3. Alternatively, jump by the second number, as many times as the first number indicates.
  4. The final landing point is your answer.

4. Division with Number Lines

Shown as partitioning or finding how many times one number fits into another.

Example: 6 ÷ 2 = 3 (Starting from 0, how many jumps of 2 to reach 6?)

How to Divide on a Number Line:

  1. Locate the dividend (the number being divided) on the number line.
  2. Make jumps of size equal to the divisor back to zero.
  3. Count the number of jumps made. This is your answer.

Advanced Number Line Concepts

1. Absolute Value

The distance from zero on a number line, always positive.

Example: |−3| = 3 and |3| = 3 (both are 3 units away from 0)

Finding Absolute Value:

  1. Locate the number on the number line.
  2. Measure its distance from zero.
  3. This distance is the absolute value.

2. Solving Inequalities

Finding all values that make an inequality statement true.

Example: x < 2 (all values less than 2, shown with an open circle at 2 and an arrow pointing left)

Solving Inequalities with a Number Line:

  1. Solve for the boundary value.
  2. Draw a circle at the boundary (filled if inclusive, open if exclusive).
  3. Shade the side of the number line that represents the solution.

3. Intervals on a Number Line

Sections of a number line represented using interval notation.

Example: [1, 5) represents all numbers between 1 and 5, including 1 but not including 5.

Representing Intervals:

  • [a, b] - Closed interval (includes both endpoints)
  • (a, b) - Open interval (excludes both endpoints)
  • [a, b) - Half-open interval (includes a, excludes b)
  • (a, b] - Half-open interval (excludes a, includes b)
  • [a, ∞) - All numbers greater than or equal to a
  • (−∞, b] - All numbers less than or equal to b

4. Distance Between Points

Finding the length between two points on a number line.

Example: Distance between -2 and 3 is |−2 − 3| = |−5| = 5 units

Finding Distance Between Points:

  1. Subtract the smaller point from the larger point, OR
  2. Use the absolute value of the difference: |a - b|
  3. The result is the distance.

Applications and Problem Solving

Temperature Changes

Using number lines to track temperature increases and decreases.

Example: The temperature was -5°C in the morning and rose by 12°C during the day. What was the final temperature?

Solution: Start at -5°C, move 12 units to the right. Final temperature = -5 + 12 = 7°C

Financial Transactions

Tracking money earned and spent using a number line.

Example: You had $20. You spent $8 on lunch, then earned $15 mowing lawns. How much do you have now?

Solution: Start at 20, move 8 units left, then 15 units right. 20 - 8 + 15 = $27

Measurement and Distance

Finding the total distance traveled using a number line.

Example: A runner starts at mile marker 3, runs to mile marker 8, then back to mile marker 1. How far did they run total?

Solution: First distance = 8 - 3 = 5 miles, Second distance = 8 - 1 = 7 miles. Total = 5 + 7 = 12 miles
