IB → ATAR: Top FAQs (2025)

What is a Notional ATAR for IB students?
It’s a percentile-style rank (Combined Rank) that places IB students on the same scale as ATAR. Universities use it to compare IB and state-curriculum applicants.
What is IBAS?
IBAS (IB Admissions Score) is a fine-grained score used in Australia. It reports quarter steps (0.25) from 24.00 up to 45.75 and maps to a Notional ATAR more precisely than whole-number IB scores.
Should I enter IB or IBAS?
If your school gives you IBAS, use IBAS for the most precise conversion. Otherwise, enter your whole-number IB total (24–45).
Does Higher Level (HL/SL) change the Notional ATAR?
No. Subject levels affect your IB total, but the conversion to Notional ATAR depends on your overall IB/IBAS, not which subjects were HL or SL.
Is this conversion the same in every Australian state?
The Notional ATAR scale is nationally comparable. Universities may apply institution‑specific adjustments to create a selection rank.
How current is this calculator?
It reflects the 2025/26 VTAC IB→Notional ATAR (including IBAS). Universities can update guidance; always check your target uni’s admissions page.
What is a selection rank vs Notional ATAR?
A selection rank starts with your Notional ATAR and then applies any institution-specific adjustments (e.g., subjects, access schemes, location) for entry decisions.
Do Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE) bonus points help?
Yes—TOK/EE contribute to your IB total, which then feeds the conversion. There are no extra bonuses after conversion.
Are predicted IB scores accepted?
Many universities consider predicted results for conditional offers, then confirm with final IB/IBAS. Always verify timelines with the institution.
Does the conversion differ for May vs November sessions?
The conversion is designed to be session‑agnostic. Timing can affect offer rounds and documentation deadlines.
What if I took a few IB courses but not the full diploma?
This tool is for full Diploma/IBAS totals. Partial IB or Certificates follow different assessment routes; check with the university.
Can my subjects (e.g., HL Math) directly boost the Notional ATAR?
Not directly. Strong subjects can raise your IB/IBAS, which improves your converted rank.
Why do IBAS values end in 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75?
IBAS uses quarter increments to give admission teams finer resolution when ranking applicants.
How do I share my result?
Use the Share button here to copy a URL with your score embedded.
Is an ATAR of 96.80 “top 3.2%” of the age cohort?
Approximately, yes. As a rule of thumb, Top ≈ 100 − ATAR. Example: 96.80 ≈ top 3.20%.
What’s the minimum IB this calculator supports?
IB 24 (pass) or IBAS 24.00. Results below that are outside the standard VTAC conversion table.
Can my ATAR be above 99.95?
99.95 is the published maximum Notional ATAR. Multiple students can share 99.95.
Do universities outside Australia use Notional ATAR?
Notional ATAR is an Australian admissions concept. For other countries, universities evaluate IB directly using their own frameworks.
Where does the data come from?
The mapping aligns with VTAC’s 2025/26 IB→Notional ATAR (including IBAS). Always confirm final policies with the university you’re applying to.
Will early offers or adjustment factors change my result here?
This tool shows your baseline Notional ATAR. Institutions may add adjustments when determining your selection rank for specific courses.
