FAST & B.E.S.T. Assessments - Complete Testing Guide for Florida Students

⚠️ IMPORTANT: FSA Has Been Replaced

The Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) are NO LONGER USED in Florida schools.

Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, Florida replaced FSA with a new assessment system:

  • FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) - for ELA Reading and Mathematics
  • B.E.S.T. Writing Assessments - for Writing skills
  • B.E.S.T. Standards Alignment - Tests now align to Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards instead of Florida Standards

This guide provides information about Florida's CURRENT assessment system for 2025-2026.

Understanding FAST Scoring and Reports

How FAST is Scored

FAST assessments use Achievement Levels to indicate student performance:

Achievement LevelDescription
Level 5Student demonstrates mastery of grade-level content
Level 4Student demonstrates proficiency - meets grade-level expectations
Level 3Student demonstrates satisfactory performance - approaching grade level
Level 2Student demonstrates below satisfactory performance
Level 1Student demonstrates inadequate understanding of grade-level content

Progress Monitoring Reports Include:

  • Scale Score: Numerical score on achievement scale
  • Achievement Level: 1-5 rating
  • Growth Information: Comparison to previous PM administrations
  • Percentile Rank: Comparison to other Florida students
  • Content Area Performance: Strengths and areas for improvement

Preparation Tips for Florida Assessments

For Students

📚 Know B.E.S.T. Standards

Understand what skills and knowledge are expected at your grade level based on B.E.S.T. Standards.

💻 Practice Online

Familiarize yourself with computer-based testing. Use practice tests and item banks available online.

📖 Read Daily

Reading a variety of texts (fiction, non-fiction, articles) builds comprehension skills naturally.

🔢 Math Practice

Regular practice with grade-level math problems builds fluency and confidence.

✍️ Write Regularly

Practice writing argumentative and opinion pieces using evidence from sources.

😌 Stay Positive

FAST measures growth over time. Use PM1 and PM2 results to focus improvement efforts for PM3.

For Parents

  • Understand the New System: FAST is different from FSA - three assessments per year track growth
  • View Progress Monitoring Positively: PM1 and PM2 help identify areas needing support before PM3
  • Access Reports: Review FAST reports when released to understand your child's progress
  • Support Learning at Home: Read together, discuss current events, practice math in real-life contexts
  • Communicate with Teachers: Ask questions about B.E.S.T. Standards and how to help at home
  • Reduce Test Anxiety: Emphasize that FAST shows growth, not just a single snapshot
  • Healthy Routines: Ensure adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise year-round

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to FSA?

FSA was replaced starting in 2022-2023. Florida transitioned to FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) for ELA Reading and Mathematics, and B.E.S.T. Writing assessments. The new system provides more frequent feedback through three progress monitoring administrations per year.

Why was FSA replaced?

Florida updated its academic standards from Florida Standards to B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Standards. The new FAST system better aligns with B.E.S.T. Standards and provides progress monitoring throughout the year rather than a single end-of-year test.

How is FAST different from FSA?

Key differences:

  • FAST is given THREE times per year (FSA was once)
  • FAST is computer adaptive (adjusts to student responses)
  • FAST provides faster results for instructional adjustments
  • FAST aligns to B.E.S.T. Standards (FSA aligned to Florida Standards)

Which FAST test counts most - PM1, PM2, or PM3?

PM3 (Spring) is the summative assessment used for accountability purposes. However, PM1 and PM2 provide important progress information to help students improve before PM3.

Are FAST tests timed?

No. FAST assessments are untimed, allowing students to work at their own pace. However, most students complete assessments within 1-3 hours depending on grade level and subject.

Can students retake FAST assessments?

Grade 10 students can retake the FAST ELA Reading assessment if they do not pass. Retake windows are provided in Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Retakes for other grade levels are generally not offered.

Do EOC exams still exist?

Yes. End-of-Course exams in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1, Civics, and U.S. History are still administered. Students must pass Algebra 1 and Biology 1 EOCs (or earn concordant scores) to graduate.

What are concordant scores?

Students can meet graduation requirements by earning specific scores on SAT or ACT instead of passing EOC exams. This provides an alternative pathway to demonstrate proficiency.

When will my child receive FAST results?

Results are typically available 2-4 weeks after the testing window closes. Schools communicate results to families. Check your school/district website for specific timelines.

Important Reminders

  • FSA No Longer Exists: Florida now uses FAST and B.E.S.T. assessments
  • Three Times Per Year: FAST PM1 (Fall), PM2 (Winter), PM3 (Spring)
  • Computer-Based: All assessments delivered online - students should be comfortable with technology
  • Untimed: Students have time to work at their own pace
  • Graduation Requirements: Must pass Algebra 1 EOC, Biology 1 EOC, and FCLE
  • B.E.S.T. Standards: All assessments align to Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking
  • Testing Windows: Districts schedule within state windows - check your school calendar
  • Progress Monitoring: PM1 and PM2 help identify areas for improvement before PM3
